Costco refusing to install BFG KO2 265/70/17 with S112 speed rating. Any advice
Hi, after confirming availability on the phone I went to Costco to get the BFG Ko2s installed on my 2015 Trail. The guy there told me that he could not install them as the speed rating on the tire is S112 and the minimum recommend speed rating is S113.
It was strange as Discount tires recommended the exact same tires.
I tried looking the minimum specs online without much luck. Any advice?

No reason NOT to go to discount tire, the price and service is impossible to beat, they will price match anything you could have gotten at Costco, just ask.

Costco= no free tire rotations and no alignment. Why go to two shops to get one job done? Numerous tire shops will match price

They aren't refusing to mount them because of the speed rating, it is because of the load rating. Lots of tire shops won't mount tires if the load rating is lower than what is spec'd by the manufacturer for the vehicle. That's the case here. They would happily mount a 121Q tire for you.
Discount Tire is great for price matching and customer service, but I've patronized Discount Tire stores in Michigan, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Washington, and without fail, they manage to scratch at least one of my wheels every single time. I generally keep my vanity in check, so it doesn't really bother me, but something to be aware of.

I do have problems with Costco tire work. they are not professional. the last time I had my tires replaced they sprayed brake cleaner on my aluminum wheels . destroyed the finish ..then I made them replace those wheels.. then when lifted the vehicle off the ground tires off the ground and torqued the nuts causing the u joint to get damaged.. the axle was snapping when they torqued the nuts ,,,, idiots !!!
I kept telling that guy , stop using brake cleaner on my wheels ..
since I have other vehicles I over the years I only bring the wheels to the Costco tire shop not the vehicle,, but the last time , I was the idiot to have them break my ride..

Advice.... don't go to Costco. Friend had a Tacoma and they wouldn't even sell him the same exact tire size that came OEM with his model because they said it wasn't rated for that vehicle. Had another friend get tires replaced to find they broke his TPMS (literally cracked the sensor off), they refused to remove the tire to check the sensor and kept saying it was a dead battery. Friend got so fed up with it took it somewhere else and that's when he found the sensor was broken off.
Yeah, don't go to Costco.

Why were they doing anything with brake cleaner?
Also - 83 lb/ft on the lug nuts should not cause any damage to anything on the vehicle. You'd need something like 100 times the force to get into the range of damaging anything. The failure strength is probably in the range of 7,500 ft/lb. In short - it's pretty unlikely that they damaged your axle by torquing the lug nuts. If they somehow damaged your axle - it wasn't related to torquing the lug nuts on.

They are doing you a favor. Go elsewhere.
Buying tires at Costco sucks because there is a 3 hour wait every time you go to get your tires rotated.
They have like 3 stalls for every 20 tire customers.
When's the last time you saw an empty Costco during business hours?

I think He is saying they torqued the lugs with the BF airgun and the wheels sent the shock through the rear end to the driveshaft yoke and broke the bolts with the rapid shock loading....probably not good for the ring and pinion either!

"S112 and the minimum recommend speed rating is S113."
Wow, good thing Costco is so safety conscience, that is a massive difference.

Its a policy thing and I don't blame um.
We don't budge from our policies either even if it is a small difference. You budge once you gonna have to do it again. And with this sue happy world better to be safe.

Go elsewhere. Costco Tire Shop is a by the book robotic operation. If you ask them to do anything out of manufacturer spec they'll refuse. Don't blame them since they're always busy af.
