I've always worked through my insurance. Unfortunately its happened couple times to myself and my wife.

I have State Farm and its been nothing but cake working through them. I gave um the other guys information and that was it. Took it to the body shop and that was the end of it.

No raise in rates nothing. I understand may not be the cheapest but from every incident I've had its well worth the money.

I worked in that specific part of the industry for 10 years.

I know every state is different, but around here there is no reason to file a claim or even notify your own insurance for a rear ender that is obvious who is at fault(unless there are injuries)

Even if you call your insurance to talk to them about it that alone could be similar to a claim and will come back to bite you down the road.

Get estimates for damages and have them cut you a check. Go buy what you want or pay a shop to fix it.
A couple of points:

Regardless of who you go through, your insurance company will find out anyway.

If you use your insurance company then you'll have to pay your deductible and rental fees. You'll get those back once your insurance company has recovered costs from the other company.

Your insurance company will be a bit more of an advocate for you, while the other company will try to do everything to keep costs low. Your company still isn't your friend though.

Well its not hurting my wallet and I'm glad I make my insurance guy work instead of me doing all the coordination I'm fine with it.

I know someone that had Geico and got rear ended. I think it took him a year to get it resolved. No thanks.

Not true. I paid $0 out of my pocket for rental. I have your usual $500 deductible.

I went through my insurance to expedite things. They are handling everything for me. So far, so good.

Then you either had rental coverage on your insurance or the other insurance agreed to cover it.

I for sure do not have rental on my side.

But I just find it funny some would not make their insurance agent do their job and take care of all the hassle.

Thanks for any input if any of you have been through this kinda thing.
I hope everything works out for ya!

Sucks that this has to be my first post, but I was rear ended recently as well (9/21). Only difference is, the driver fled on foot, leaving his car. Got his plates but no insurance info. Why can't we have nice things in this world?

Worst part is, he's local. Found his social media page and we have mutual acquaintances.

You can't be very bright to abandon your own car after an accident if there was someone there to identify you.

Parts are on order. Things are slow but steady.

Pulled off my swing to check the rear hatch and everything is still totally functional. The swing and ladder took most of the impact.

Two words to say before they close out your claim: Diminished Value.

Seek diminished value...below is what I had to do...it was a pain but just today I received a payout...I just updated my thread from August on my crash - 2019 SR5 Premium with 560 miles on it when I was t-boned:

Long post but worth the read if you are in a similar situation. I wanted to give an update on my diminished value claim. Once the 4Runner was repaired, I informed Progressive that I was pursuing a diminished value claim. Keep in mind in Indiana there is no set formula or legal requirement for diminished value.

I started out with a letter from my dealer stating diminished value along with a trade in offer from them showing the CarFax report with the significant accident on it. The dealer also gave an offer letter for an identical 2019 4Runner with no damage. Progressive rejected this and told me I actually had to sell or trade in my 4Runner to show that I actually lost value.

With that, I went a few steps further and did some research and Provided Progressive with the following information:
1. I obtained a purchase offer from CarMax in which they ran a CarFax and found the accident showing the price adjusted down for the accident.
2. I obtained a purchase offer from Carvana which also noted the accident and adjusted the price down.
3. Searched and found an identical used 2019 4Runner SR5 Premium with similar miles for sale that had a clean CarFax and printed that off.
4. Searched and found 4 2019 sr5 Premiums across the country with low miles with accident histories and printed off all of them showing far less sales prices than the clean 4Runners.

I submitted all of that and Progressive still refused any payout. I even escalated to the manager of claims and he stated that Progressives stance was that no payouts occur until the loss is actually realized by a sale or trade in.

Next step: I contacted the Indiana Bureau of Insurance to log an official complaint against Progressive outlining all of the information that I sent to Progressive. The Bureau of Insurance then sent a letter to Progressive giving them 20 days to respond...I did not see this letter but would certainly like to given my outcome.

Today I received a call from Progressive and they offered $2000 for diminished value. I accepted that offer.

So, bottom line is do your homework and stay with it. It's been a lot of phone calls, research and waiting but it paid off.
