Replacement Key Fob options

I am looking for a replacement key fob option and found out the dealer sells them for over $350. I looked for answers to this question in the forum and was surprised to not find alternatives. I see some on ebay, but not sure if they are programmable. If you know an quality alternative to the pricey dealer key fob please let me know.

not sure if this is something you're looking for but you can get a fob case from these 2 sites; pretty much remove your key and chip from the original key fob.

I assume this is for your New 4Runner and you want the fob/ key combo.
I only got one key with my used 2012 Trail so I bought the items below from Amazon. I programmed the remote using a strange series of instructions I found on the internet. Then used the ODB2 cable and an old laptop to program the security.
Next I found a locksmith shop to cut the new key. Cost was around $80
Tip: If you lost your other key you can use the software to erased the missing key so it cannot start the truck.
Key Fob w Key

ODB2 Cable

It sounds complicated but it was not to bad really and I learned some other cool stuff you can do with the software that comes with the cable like make all your windows roll down with the remote
As far as quality is concerned it looks just like my other key OEM I assume & it works perfect I use it daily keeping the old one as the spare.

I have the AJT and it is a solid design, but having had flip outs and keyless for years I find have the “key” poking me in my pocket super annoying. My other fobs I don’t even notice in my front little change pockets.

On the list for the Meso Custom. Plan to modify my other key with it so I have both. Getting the chip out is kind of a pain though. Plus it looks like the Meso has a bottle opener, love stuff like that.

But if AJT came out with a folder and still had all the customizable features I might lean that way. Kind of shocking he hasn’t

I had the same question last week and asked Toyota dealer. It does cost like $300 for a replacement. BUT you can get one for $34 but no push buttons just the chip and key. The guy said it can be purchased at the counter for $34 but then there is a programming fee of $20. OR I could come in as service and they would do the key for $34 and no programming fee. They would even cut it and all.

I bought my 2015 4Runner used. It only had 1 key/remote. I bought 2 new ones off ebay, had them cut at a locksmith then programmed at the dealer. 2 keys with the remote fob were $35, the dealer charged $75 to program them. All 3 work perfect. No local locksmiths could program the key to the vehicle all told me dealer only.

Thanks forum, those are some great options I would have never otherwise found. Hopefully others find this thread useful.

I have an AJT key fob case...its ok i guess, kinda cheap looking and the plastic is low quality.

That MESO folding keyfob will be the AJT replacement for me.

This is the option I used. I purchased a used smart key from eBay. The techstream was able to clone it like in 2min. Then I went to a lock smith to cut the key.

You just have to be patient and follow the instructions on how to install the software.

But I think ace hardware is the easiest route. But programming it yourself is the cheapest route.

I stopped by 2 local Ace and both said they could not do the 3 button key fob.

Ended up buying 2 from Amazon, borrowing a Snapon scanner and programming the transducers, but no option to do the remote buttons.
Owner said that this was only the $4k model and it will work with the $10k scanner.

One of these days I'll have to install the Techstream software but the keys at least start the car for now.

MESO released their Flip Fob's today. $82 out the door. I ordered one so we will see how it goes. Hoping for a good quality product since its a little more than double the cost of other normal aftermarket fobs.
