Question Info Ski carrier installation on roof rack (5th gen)

Hi everyone,

Ski season is coming soon and I was in the process to buy a ski carrier (Yakima or similar) which from what I can see require to be mounted on cross bars.

Given that my 5th gen at the moment only has the stock rails, I was also thinking to install a full-size roof rack (looking at LDF, Prinsu, Victory 4x4) so that I can use it also to carry camping gear, etc.

I was just wondering if you guys know of any solution on how to mount ski on these types of roof rack, or if the classic ski carrier can be also mounted bolt on the rack.

Thank you!

Most ski carriers attach to the crossbars via a clamp. So a Yakima or Thule ski carrier would work perfectly with the crossbars on the 80/20 extrusion style racks. Some carriers have a bolt in style with T-tracks as well so in theory you should be able to just slide in a carriage bolt and secure the carrier with a nut. I ran my Yakima FatCat 6 using clamps on my racks crossbars without any issue.

Are you buying a full roof rack just because you can or do you actually need the weight capacity? Full racks make ski racks more difficult to access

If you're just going to be putting some bags / boxes up there a cargo rack on the stock crossbars is plenty and saves $$$

No, I have to didn't install crossbars on my K9 rack. The main slats on the K9 rack go vertically but underneath the support bars for the main slats run horizontally. So by luck the clamps on my FatCat 6 fit the spacing on the K9 rack where the horizontal support bars run. So if you went with a 80/20 rack where the bars are smaller then you should be able to clamp down on those a lot easier.

After looking at some K9 pictures I get what you saying. Could you explain what do you mean by '80/20 rack'?
