Blacked Out TRD Skid Plate

Has anyone blacked out the TRD skid plate before? What is the best way to do it? Get it powder coated? It would need to be something that can take some knicks and still look nice. I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts on this and the best way to do it (also if anyone has a picture where they have done it themselves). Very little experience with this type of stuff but I will be taking delivery of my army green in a few weeks and I like the color and everything else blacked out but I feel like the skid plate looks out of place on it.

Powder coating will work however it is no more durable than the factory silver coating. I was thinking about this on mine as the 4R is black. But after some relatively minor rock encounters the silver actually "hides" the gouge marks better than black ever would.

A spray on bed liner material may work for you depending on the type of off roading you do. Much more durable than paint/powder, but not indestructable either...

That is not a bad idea and spray on bed liner isn’t to expensive. May also be easy to touch up on occasion.

I had mine powder coated. Since the aluminum is that raw bumpy material, there is extra prep involved beyond scuffing the surface. I decided to let the pros handle it. So far it’s holding up well.

Hey guys, unless they changed something on the coating of the TRD plates, they are powder coated that color and are not raw aluminum.

When I painted mine, I beadblasted it down to raw before I primed and painted mine.

Don't really see the point if you wheel a lot. Constantly going to be having silver show through unless you want to touch it up that much. Obviously if not wheeling then go for it.

Awesome, yeah it does help. Have you had to touch it up? How well does it handle dings or scratches?

Great to know! Has anyone else painted it without bead blasting it?

Yep. Used simple acetone to take off the "powder" coat, washed it, wiped with alchohol and hit it with spray paint. If it gets scuffed up, i spray it again. Best paint job i ever had was primer black, can of touch up in the back.

I just rattle-canned mine and then added red vinyl lettering from TVD. After almost 6 months of use, it's not perfect anymore, but it's only really noticeable if you get up really close to it - from afar it looks great. Really easy/cheap to touch up as well. Didn't need to do any pre-install work to it either - just washed it up pretty well and made sure it was dry. Didn't see the point in paying for powder coating on something that's meant to take some abuse.

Awesome! Well thanks for the feedback everyone and thoughts! I think I will try out the rustoleum approach first. Sounds fairly straight forward and like everyone has mentioned, easy to touch up.

I paid someone to paint mine for me. I touch it up with spray paint whenever I find chips from going off road.
