So thought I'd post a little update here. The stereo is doing great, but there's one major issue - I'm still rocking 8-year old stock dash speakers! Of course I could've just hacked up some aluminum flat bar and mounted them up like I did on my last 4Runner, but I wanted to do something a bit more custom.

This quarantine has given me some spare time, so I finally finished up my 3D printed speaker mount design and was able to do a test fit last night. It was almost perfect right off the bat and they would've worked, but I saw some areas for improvement. I made up a new set today out of PETG and I think these will work great. I'll post up a few more photos during the install, but this is what they look like:

Those mounts are awesome. Great work. Beats or hack jobs on the factory mounts. Like the mic holder as well. Mad skills bro

Those look amazing. Would you be inclined to make and sell another set.

Great thread

Really nice thread KP Texan, you've done a nice clean install there. Gives me a few ideas for sure.

I really like the dash speaker mounts you printed. Any chance of posting up a link to the .STL files for those (and the mic mount) for any of us interested in printing up a set for our own use? I for one would definitely like to re-do my hacked together mounts I made when I replaced my dash speakers.

Thanks!

I would be interested in a set for sure too, or the file.

Thank you! I think I will post up the STL; just don't let me catch you guys selling them, haha. Let me get them mounted up first so I don't send someone down a rabbit hole with a bum design. I think it will be perfect since I already bolted in my first prototype before this one, but you never know. I should get some time to do it tomorrow.

I've also improved my microphone mount design since I'm more experienced with FDM printing now (still no way around supports though). Not sure why I didn't think of this before, but I also modified it with a cutout for the microphone wire to pass through on the outside - this way the microphone mount can be used without passing the connector end of the microphone through it first. My original designs are here, but I'll upload the new one tonight: 5th Gen 4Runner Kenwood Bluetooth Microphone Mount by KPTexan - Thingiverse

I sure will! Sorry guys, got caught up with Easter activities this weekend, but I should have some time in the next few days to install them.

In the meantime I made up my adapter harnesses using the high pass filters (capacitors) that came with the speakers. I was also able to source the correct 4-pin speaker connectors from eBay to plug into the stock harness.

So finally got around to installing my dash speakers, but ran into a slight hiccup a few nights ago when I went out to the garage to take care of it! My battery was pretty much completely dead - wouldn't even come close to cranking. It had been about 3-weeks since I drove anywhere in my 4Runner due to the quarantine, and I work from home normally anyway so most of my trips were short ones for weeks prior to that. Anyway, took care of the battery (now have a Battery Tender on the way) and then was able to take care of the dash speakers.

Good news is that everything seemed to fit up just fine with the mounts I made - with the exception of the inboard screw on the passenger side mount. The additional thickness of the mount + speaker standoff + speaker was too deep for the stock fastener's length. I really hated to use anything other than the OEM fastener there, but U-nuts designed for sheet metal threads are pretty forgiving and I found that a #10 x 1" sheet metal screw grabbed in there just fine (#12 was a bit too tight for my liking). The 3 other stock fasteners were plenty long to work in their spots. This made a huge difference in sound quality compared to the stock dash speakers, and it makes sense that people are even changing them out on their stock systems. A few photos:

Here's the harness I mentioned before:

I used an eBay supplier for the plug like this one: 2x Aftermarket Tweeter Speaker Connector Wire Harness Adapter For Toyota Scion | eBay

I also removed the sealing ring from the bottom of the stock speaker grilles. They are designed to seal around the stock speaker, but serve no purpose when going to 3.5" speakers. The grilles still seemed to fit up fine without removing that ring as far as I could tell, but I'd imagine they block a bit of the sound from the speaker cone (really I'd like to redesign that speaker grill with a larger sound opening anyway, and maybe wrapped in black speaker cloth). It was very easy to remove those rings and a set of flush cut micro cutters did a clean job of this - I have this set and would recommend something like it if you don't already have a pair in your tool arsenal: https://www.amazon.com/Hakko-CHP-170...7656429&sr=8-1

Those look great, glad they worked out so well.

Do you want to post up the STL files for the mounts as they are or are you OCD and want to tweak that passenger mount before you do?

If you do want to tweak it and could use a beta tester, I'd be happy to print up a set and mount them up and give you feedback this weekend. If you don't, I'm sure I can live with the 1" #10 screw as well ;)

I think I'm just going to let the design stay as is, since I don't really plan on selling them. This is kind of a tricky spot to install speakers, and the #10 screw seems to be a solid mounting option which can't be seen once the grille is in place.

To give a bit of background on why those round standoffs are on the mount, the bottom of the mounting tabs on my 3.5" speakers (and I'm sure most others) are actually higher than the bottom mounting surface of the speaker basket. To use the stock screw in that location, I would have to drop the entire speaker down by roughly 5mm which would have other design ramifications - taking up little available clearance between the speaker magnet and ductwork, more difficult to print, etc.

I'll upload the STL file today and post a link here. I'll also post up an STP or F3D file if you want to tweak the design further.

Did you add a bass blocker or anything else to that? My Limited has the stock JBL system and I don't like having to turn it up so high to hear it. I would like to change a few things to make it clearer at lower volumes.

Yes, there's a bass blocking capacitor (I think 270uF) under that Tesa tape, but it's a bit hard to see. The speakers actually came with them in the box, but I had to solder up the wires to them. To anyone reusing the connector from the stock speaker, you need to get that capacitor out of there - it's way too high of a crossover frequency (I think I made some notes a few years ago on it in the dash speaker replacement thread).

Dash speaker mount files can be found here:
PrusaPrinters

These are for the community to use - all I ask is that you don't try to sell them for profit.
