Does break in matter?
New owner 2020 4wd 4 runner sr5 premium. Im the only one that test drove it. Had plastics everywhere not even prepped for.showroom that new. Windshield full of plastics and labels.
Anyways when i got my new 2018 yfz450r se quad I broke it in HARD i made sure to giver hell without hitting rev limiter first 5 hours and oil changed it and all is good. On motorcycles i am a real believer to giver hell off the showroom floor after a good warmup never had issues over the years...
On my new 4 runner it only has 76 miles after test drive and after some city trips. It had 11 miles when i test drove it.
Should i stomp on it a little to maker scream a little. Ive been easy on the 4 runner and a little get on it just a little. The first 4nrunner i ever test drove another one i gaver hell LOL !! With filipino older sales guy hanging on. LOL funny stuff.
I hope i dont start a pissing contest.
Take it easy first 300 miles or get on it once in a while?

Putting shifter to left of D does it just lock no higher than 4th gear or holds gears longer too kinda sport mode?
If in 5th and move shifter to left will it downshift to 4th and stress engine tranny high rev it?
Can i put it in left the S while driving?

Personally, with a new truck like that I would stick with just in D and see how it performs. I would drive it as you normally do and it will break in your driving habits overtime. Enjoy the new truck.

Give her hell!
I'm also in the giver-her-hell camp, and a former auto and heavy equipment tech. I usually drive normally for the first 200 miles or so. Then I find a little-traveled road or new neighborhood street with no houses built yet and break in the brakes first.
45 mph to 5 mph gently 3 times, then 45 to 5 moderately 3 times, then 50 to 5 abruptly 3 times, and back up to road speed to cool off.
Then, proceed to work up to full throttle blasts in forward and reverse. Shift to 4Hi, do the same. 4Lo, same. Get everything good and hot. You want gear faces front and back, rings, bearings, everything to experience load and initial wear.
Drive normally for another 1800 miles, change oil and filter. I drive my vehicles for decades and the drivelines never give any trouble. It's always ball joints or electrical gremlins.

Putting the shifter to the left will hold the upshift until you nearly the hit the rev limiter, then the computer shifts it anyways. Downshifts are normal upon braking. If you pull the shifter back to downshift, the computer will only let it downshift in an acceptable RPM range that won't blow the engine, and it will beep at you until the RPM comes down enough.

From the "Breaking in your new Toyota" section of the owner's manual:
"To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended: - For the first 200 miles - Avoid sudden stops.
- For the first 500 miles - Do not tow a trailer
- For the first 1000 miles - Do not drive at extremely high speeds
- Avoid sudden acceleration
- Do not drive continuously in the low gears
- Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods"

Every performance car I had was "drive it hard" from the get go. As long as you're varying rpms and not redlining, do what you want. Also, 11 miles means it was test driven by others regardless of all the plastics being on it. Every 4R I got to check out had literally 1 mile on the odometer.

I would drive it normal with varying rpm but wouldnt tow for 500 to 1000 miles for the sake of the R&P. based on gear swaps, I have never bought a new vehicle (next year hopefully)

old materials and enginering techniques would leave you with glazed cylinder walls and piston rings that dont seat if the engine was babied.
New tech has computers that learn how to respond to your needs. Dont give the software false impressions, drive it like you drive it. Code in the ECU is there to prevent damage.
