It's not what it used to be.
Yep, Toyota is doing something Very special with that oil spec, looks fantastic. I’m torn between Toyota and Amsoil right now, only got 900 miles on my rig now so I have a few weeks to decide. Doing something similar as you, dumping factory fill at 2-3k then every 5k after that. I’ll be posting my UOA’s here for reference.

A lot of people say the guy is full of it but I learned a lot about oil in general. I have mixed feelings about it but it’s loaded with other good information.

If it is, it looks amazing on paper, look at that Moly. Check out molybdenum basics: Moly Basics
I have used mobil1 engine oil since 2000. have had no engine issues. replace oil 5K-10K mile range. oil looks great when changing not dark and no sludge.removal of the toyota filter cart looks clean no metal particles .

your toyota oil test indicates a load of moly and mag .. mobil 1 only has less then 100PPM ..

Toyota oil probably will cause the engine to be quieter because of the mag and moly additives .

I haven't but I will look into it. Do yourself a favor and ditch the OEM plastic oil filter housing at your first oil change. Replace it with an OEM aluminum housing.

I just seen that on Antman’s oil thread; how is the figment and quality? If it’s good to go I’m in!

I had no issues with fitment and quality of the Amazon metal oil filter cap. I like the Motiv MX2320 tool. I made a set of solid wood ramps out of 6x6 with a 2x6 screwed onto the side. I cut a long incline of at least 16 inches to make it easy to drive up and attached a 4x4 at the opposite end to keep from driving off.

I did not trim the tabs on the skid plate as described in Antman's thread. I bent the outermost 1/4 inch to make it easy to reinstall the plate. If oil changes have been done by someone else, check the skid plate bolts for stretch, galling, cross-threading, etc. Chase threads using a tap and replace bolts if necessary. Use anti seize and do not over torque.

Use inexpensive and genuine Toyota oil filters. The end seals are molded and difficult to indent with a thumbnail, so I wondered how it might conform and seal. I put a clean filter on a surface plate and measured filter height at 4 locations with a caliper. All readings were within 0.0005 inches. I measured a used filter and all readings were within 0.0005 inches. Just for kicks, I went to an auto parts store with a hand calipers and performed the same measurements on 3 name brand filters. I would never use any of them because none of them matched or exceeded 0.0005 inches variation in height. One of them differed as much as 0.012 inches.

I recommend using genuine Toyota oil plug seals. I choose not buy what is advertised to be genuine seals on Amazon.

Use a torque wrench if you haven't "calibrated" your arm and hand by experience.

It's OEM it fits perfectly. It was used on the Prius and Camry but not the 4R or Tacoma for some reason. Did the swap on my 2016 4Runner, 2016 Tacoma, will do it on my 2019 Highlander when I hit 2K miles and I bought one for my dad for his 2019 4Runner.

That’s the info on the oil filters I was looking for, thank you for that information. I made home made ramps with 6x6 also, solid as a rock, I feel very safe under them. Glad the OEM Aluminium oil filter housing is working for everyone, I’m looking forward to it.

You're absolutely right. Mobil 1 may be great for some engines but there is a reason Toyota uses so much moly and mag in their oil and there is a reason the 4.0 runs so much quieter when using that oil. It's about the same price as the M1 and a little less convenient since I have to get it from the dealer but it's what both my vehicles will run on for as long as I own them. Or maybe until someone else makes an oil with as much moly and mag? Very possible it's out there, never know.

Hmm, the 4Runner has one of the highest ratings for reliability and the engines last for 100s of thousands of miles on a regular basis. I don't think it matters what oil you use as long as you change it per the service interval of 10,000 miles or less and match:

Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20

If it makes you feel good to spend more on oil and change it more often, do it. Report back in 200,000 miles and let us know how it worked out. If I keep mine that long I will as well and we can compare notes.

I don't know, I've used Toyota...well I assume that is what the dealer was using under Toyota Care. Then when I took over service I changed the filter cap, out of necessity as it seemed the dealer put it on with an impact gun, and used Mobil1 for 2 changes (5K each) The latest change I used Amsoil. Honestly I really don't notice any difference at this point. We'll see what it looks like in about 3K.
The tricky one seems to be transfer case fluid. The Toyota stuff can be elusive from what I have read and it's $$$.

Not sure what they use with toyotacare, I have never used that service for reasons just like you posted. Not worth the free oil changes to me, I'll do it myself and know it was done right. The 75LF transfer case fluid isn't cheap but it's cheaper than taking a chance with other fluids and possibly causing damage to your transfer case. Plus I plan on changing it every 50K along with transmission fluid which for me is every 7 years.

Plus I plan on changing it every 50K along with transmission fluid which for me is every 7 years.
Yeah, I was unimpressed with the service I received, I'll leave it at that.

At 40K I did the diffs since I had been through a few deep water crossings and have not moved the breathers. No evidence of water in the fluids and they looked pretty good. 50K will come probably in the spring and I plan to do transfer case then. I will use Toyota fluid or I've read Royal Purple Synchro Max is a suitable alternative.
