At 40K I did the diffs since I had been through a few deep water crossings and have not moved the breathers. No evidence of water in the fluids and they looked pretty good. 50K will come probably in the spring and I plan to do transfer case then. I will use Toyota fluid or I've read Royal Purple Synchro Max is a suitable alternative.
I actually did my diffs at 11K (plan was10k but didn't have time) and I was glad I did. The rear was pretty dark and had a lot of metal on the magnet and glitter in the drain pan. Nothing of concern, all very fine dust, but I was still glad to get all that out of there. The front was still super clean but really can't know until it's drained. I have read of a lot of things being used in the transfer case including gear oil but that's just not for me. Some people say it works, some people say they have a hard time getting into 4lo My view is, just use what's called for and have that peace of mind.

Enjoying this discussion. Questions: for those using the Toyota oil, what is your cost at the dealership? It's a really good oil. I see that the oil filter is around $5, which is a good price.

To throw a monkey wrench into the discussion, I've started using the overseas manual to select my oil grade. [insert CAFE discussion here as to why only 0w-20 is recommended in the US; I don't want to clutter the thread]

For my model year, Toyota's 4Runner motor oil charts in Australia look like this:

The upshot of this is that I'm currently using 5w-30 for the winter, and may move to a 0w-40 or even a 10w-40 next summer. Don't know about using 15w-40, that's a bit thick for me but in high summer....

The engine doesn't have different parts if it's in the US, Australia, Asia or Europe. It's the same engine, same oiling system, same bearings, etc.

I got a great UOA using 5w-20 while towing last summer, but I'm testing the 5w-30 to see if it does better on the UOA. Including the 5w-20 UOA below for reference.

Currently using Amsoil, but likely changing to Schaeffer's once my stockpile is used up.

Flame suit on.

Fantastic UOA; if that was my report I would not change a thing. That Amsoil is serving you Very well; I’ve been using Amsoil since 2013 when I was canyon racing in the mountains. Racing up the side of a mountain every weekend for hours then daily driving to work for 5k miles and my blackstone UOA’s were perfect. I really like the Gear oil as well! There are only a few group 4 and 5 base oils on the market and Amsoil is one of them. They have a very good product, especially if you prefer long drain intervals.
I think a 40 weight oil is to heavy imo but I’m seriously considering 0w30. You make a Very good point, in other countries most vehicles are using a thicker oil per the manual. This rise in 20 weight oil is CAFE requirements, plain and simple imo. But the flip side to this light oil generation is the attention to formulation and additives; a good example is your UOA.
If you bump up in weight please let us know how is goes and what oil and weight you choose.

You and I are on the same page with our fluid intervals, I’ll be dumping my Factory gear oil at 10k, transmission and transfer case at 40-50k, Factory engine oil at 2-3k and every 5k after that. It’s a system I’ve been using many years and has served me well. My HD trucks I always did 30k for diffs, transmission and tcase.
People think I’m crazy to change me diffs at 30k but look at this> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-yG3D3JBRs&feature=youtu.be
Now imagine all the highways speed driving, towing, off-roading and everything in between. Gear oil gets beat and needs sensible service intervals.

I'm pretty sure the manual has something about running different weight oils based conditions to an extent. I'll have to go back and look again. Living in AZ I considered going to 10w30 since most of the time I'm more worried about heat than cold starts.

Toyota doesn't make oil.

Any off the shelf oil of the correct viscosity will work just fine.

Oil too expensive!

Honestly, dont even use oil. Oil is expensive, so i would probably just put some wiper fluid in there

I just seen the TRD oil filter part # Genuine Toyota Parts PTR43-00081 TRD Oil Filter. Toyota site says it won’t fit, anyone have information on this oil filter? Is it compatible with our rigs?

You're right, Toyota oil is made by Mobil. It is however made to a specification that is not available from any other oil on the market. Yes any oil will work but will it word as well as the Toyota formulation? Will the engine run as smooth and quite on those oils? In my experience with M1 and Valvoline, the answer is no.
