So, I've actually researched this considerably. Mobil1 is an inferior oil to some other big box store available synthetics, primarily Pennzoil Platinum. PP has a better additive package as per Blackstone Labs analysis. However, regular oil and filter changes will likely matter more than the particular oil you select, as you're not likely to keep the truck long enough to realize a difference.
As far as Toyota Synthetic 0w-20, apparently the formulation has changed recently, with a much higher magnesium content than it used to have. Long story short, the formulation is to help prevent pre-ignition in direct injection engines, and is a catch all for the entire fleet. It is not "bad" per se for non-DI engine, but it can lead to piston ring fouling in the long term, before a more standard blend oil.
Again, buy a quality oil and do the recommended changes and you're probably fine. I work with a guy with a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe who hasn't changed the oil in something like 40k miles. We pulled the dipstick a while back and it was smoked out brown and mostly dry. A little bit of black oil on the tip. We joked about it a little bit, and he went to 7-11 and got a quart of cheapo store oil, and poured it in. He still drives it into work, and it is about 4 months later.

Tell us more about the new 0W-20 formulation when used in the 5th Gen 4R non-DI engine. How does this oil cause more piston ring fouling?

My apologies, Toyota has very high Moly content, not magnesium. I misspoke, as I'm not really an expert, but I did read a lot on the subject. I'll look for some references and drop them here when I find them.

10,000 mixed city (~75%) and highway (~25%) miles. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is about twice as expensive as Walmart SuperTech and about half as expensive as Amsoil Signature Series. SuperTech is branded to Walmart by the lowest bidder, so I choose to not buy it. What's the thermal breakdown temperature of SuperTech? I don't know. QSUD oil costs me about 0.4 cents per mile. Gasoline costs about 15 cents a mile. I choose not to buy Amsoil, which is the most expensive and arguably the absolute best oil. QSUD is a high quality (or very high quality) oil at a midway price point which makes it my preferred choice.

SuperTech is actually a pretty decent oil especially for the price. It's not bottled by the lowest bigger, it is and always has been bottled by Warren Distribution, same company that bottles Amazon brand oil. Well known 90+ year old company so they must be doing something right. Not saying I care to run it in my 4Runner but I would absolutely run it in an older vehicle that I care less about.

Mobil 1 makes several different types of oil. I used TGMO for the first 60k but got tired of trying to track it down for a decent price. I’ve been using M1 Extended Performance since. 7500-10,000 mile intervals depending on my driving conditions. No measurable oil use at all between changes. Today I switched to M1 EP High Mileage so we will see what that does for me.

I’m really surprised how good that used oil filter looks, does it show any sign of deterioration? Any noticeable areas of failure?

No, why would it? Have you seen reports of filter failures in these motors?
It is a little darker than the filter I took out at 2039 miles.

I'm on my 6th oil and filter change and the Toyota Filter has come out Immaculate each time.....no swarf in the pleats and no distortion in shape, and no sediment in the reservoir either. These are durable and well machined engines.

Thank you for that, I just got my 4R a few weeks ago and trying to learn as much as possible. Never owned a Toyota ever in my life. Everyone says the same thing on the Toyota oil filter. Glad it holds up!

Check out Project Farm on youtube. He does some very cool stuff in general but also does a lot of oil testing. Nothing "scientific" I suppose but it's a good watch either way. He tested a lot of oils and most beat M1 by a long shot including Amazon oil and SuperTech oil. Amsoil came out on top in the end. I would love to see a test between Amsoil and Toyota oil. I sent him a message requesting that so we'll see!

I've been using M1EP for the last 40k, yesterday I went back to TGMO because I was able to get it from the dealer for $6.06/qt (I bought 14 qts). I've also used Rotella gas truck, pennzoil Platinum, regular M1, and M1 advanced fuel economy with no issues whatsoever. I buy the filters 5 at a time, usually from Camelback Toyota or someone who has a good deal going. I change my oil every 5K and never had any issue with the plastic filter housing, maybe because I torque it correctly to 18lbs and put the oring in the right slot. I'm at 183,000 miles. I also reccomend checking the PCV valve every once in a while, mine was gummed up at around 140k.

183k miles on a mix of different oil manufacturers is good positive reinforcement. I like the 5k oil change interval also, thanks for the feedback.

I definitely would like to see how the Toyota oil does. I just picked up a OBDLink-mx so I can monitor my fluids while driving. Got it set to engine oil temperature, transmission pan temperature, transmission torque converter temperature, coolant temperature, air intake and battery voltage. All monitored in real time. It’s a Bluetooth device and also works as a scan tool for checking and clearing codes. Connect to your phone for on the go monitoring.
