my understanding is that our engines don't even have an oil temperature sensor, just a simple oil pressure switch for the dummy light. so, any idea where the scan gauge is pulling oil temp readings from?

no modern engine should be running oil that cold on a normal basis. that's waaaay under temperature for proper oil detergents to work right and would not allow for water vapor to burn off on a regular basis which creates other issues.

this is very strange.

I have never seen an oil temp sensor on a vehicle for the engine.
transmission fluid temp is common.

Toyota does not have an engine oil pressure sensor . as you stated just a switch which is ODD IMO !!! I do have the scan gauge no sensor so no oil temp or pressure data...

I monitor the tranny temp all the time.. engine coolant temp is very stabil .. engine has a good coolant system.

I switched from mobil 1 engine oil to toyota engine oil .. engine is very quiet now..

Got my first UOA from Blackstone after using Amsoil SS 0W-20 (11,781 miles on the oil). Here it is for everyone's perusing pleasure.

I’m not sure where the sensor is but the temperature is quite alarming, i’m thinking about getting a thermal gun and measuring the pan temperature and comparing it with the gauge. I might try and surf YouTube tonight to see if I can find out where that engine oil temperature sensor is. Or maybe I’ll try and stop by the dealership tomorrow. This is definitely something I want to get to the bottom of.

My 2019 Subaru Forester has an engine oil temp gauge. I was kinda surprised it has that.

definitely let us know what you find. my understanding, based on searching around on this forum, the FJ forums, and Tacoma forums is that the 1GR doesn't have an oil temp sensor (only sensors for coolant and trans temp), and a binary oil pressure sensor for the dummy light in the dash.

as for reported oil temps, seems to be a very hard bit of info to find. people seem mostly interested in running oil pressure, cool temp and trans temp gauges. very little info out there about indicated 1GR oil temps....most likely because these engines are so reliable, most people can't be bothered.

Oil temp is going to be acceptable with a coolant temp of more than 180. Synth is stable to 425 so overheating the oil just isn't an issue except for the case of a catastrophic failure being imminent. I HAVE noticed the 4Runner has a ''lazy'' thermostat that takes a very long time to get up to temp even in 120 degree temps with the A/C on?! Anyone know if they are 195 thermostats?

I would say it has a 180 degree thermostat judging by my gauge, or maybe a 185, I’ve never seen my coolant temps go over 190.

I have not seen a thermostat colder than 192 in an emissions controlled vehicle in 30 years!......and a 180 would certainly cost some mpg! Engine must get over 160 just to go into closed loop on the ECU! Maybe the slow rise to temp is part of the reason We all are disappointed in the MPG? It would be running very rich until it gets up to running temp and that needs to be around 200 for efficiency.

your temps look normal but the engine oil temp does not look correct. should be 250F area .. temp is on your reader 150F ??? not correct.. engine oil gets way hotter than transmission and coolant .

pistons cause the higher oil heat.

my 2016 runner engine temp rises pretty quick in normal air temps 50-80F.. if its 20F out and I have the heater blowing on the max YA it does take a bit longer.

I put a plastic shield in front of the ac condenser in the cold weather below 30F 50% covered.. reason I do it , I want my toes to get nice and warm quickly ..
engine temps 180-185F range very stable because it has a manual fan not electric ..
electric fans do work well when cold temps hit .. heat rises quicker than mechanical fan..

in hot weather the electric fans do cause temps to rise in the 225F range with the ac off when in traffic ..
I have 4 vehicles all with different coolant systems .. toyota system I like .. works very well compared to the GM vehicles.

Great UOA! And more proof that 10k miles OCI is fine and dandy. 3.6 on the TBN at almost 12k miles is pretty damn good!

a follow up on this - just did a full oil change with QSUD 5W-30, then immediately drove 1400 miles up and down the east coast for Christmas vacation.

fully loaded with luggage and 4 passengers, AND a full Thule Sonic XL cargo box on the roof. still running the factory Dunlop AT20 highway tires. cruise set between 72-75 most of the trip. temps bounced between 65 and 35.

19.5 MPG average according to the trip computer. if we didn't have the cargo box on the roof i'm 100% sure we could have matched or bettered the 20 MPG highway rating. i'm not as concerned about city ratings since that can vary so much based on traffic and driving habits whereas highway driving is more steady state.

i know its not a direct comparison to running 20wt in the sump on the same route, but i think its fair to say you can get so close to (or in some cases, as good as) factory highway ratings running a 30 weight, that it hardly matters.

^^^^^Great Field Test^^^^^^

How did you like the 5w30 overall? Gas mileage looks like minimal differences between the 30 and 20 weight oils. How was the cold starts? Any sluggishness?
The QSUD is by far my favorite off the self oil! If you do a UOA please post in this thread for me, would love to see that.
