your copper and aluminum will keep dropping and level out at around 30-40k miles. that seems to be where most 4Runner UOA's show those values stabilizing and indicating its actually broken in.
i think you found your blend! i'd go ahead and run that 8-10k with confidence from here on out i might even pick some up for myself sometime...

Yes sir, I was in 2nd gear and 4Hi all the way through the San Juan mountain range. Loaded down the engine was working hard.

Not every oil change, I wanted to see how the engine liked the 30 weight oils. Ran two 0w30’s back to back and currently running the Amsoil 5w30 and the engine Loves it, UOA’s look good.

I assume the engine is quieter with the 5W30? What climate are you running the 5W30 in currently? Not sure I would want to run that in the winter months but in the summer I don't see it being a problem.

When I can really hear and feel the difference is under throttle getting onto the interstate or passing. The 5w30 really smoothed out the engine overall. I’m in the Georgia/Florida region.

MD until June 11th and then NC for good so we do see cold weather. Not sure I'll try it but I like the idea either way.

19.5 MPG average according to the trip computer. if we didn't have the cargo box on the roof i'm 100% sure we could have matched or bettered the 20 MPG highway rating. i'm not as concerned about city ratings since that can vary so much based on traffic and driving habits whereas highway driving is more steady state.
i know its not a direct comparison to running 20wt in the sump on the same route, but i think its fair to say you can get so close to (or in some cases, as good as) factory highway ratings running a 30 weight, that it hardly matters.

Thanks for the update!
Glad to see the 5W-30 did very well for you. I agree a small change in oil viscosity barely makes any difference with the 4.0L as far as fuel economy is concerned. Aerodynamics, and specifically air density (cold weather) is what will knock it down 2-4 mpg, depending on how cold it gets where you live.

Check out the pic of my gauges!!!
Not sure how much fuel loss I’m getting with the 5w30, but I’ll take 21.6 MPG’s cruzing at 75 MPH LOL
This was today from Georgia to Florida about 500 miles. ENGINE is Butter Smooth.

thanks - and agreed. short tripping, aggressive throttle, bad aero, rolling resistance and cold temps as you said have far more effect. not that i'm sweating it too much with a heavy SUV in the first place.

Nice! These engines are specified for thicker oils overseas, not surprised it is doing well for you.

I snapped a pic for ya. I got it to monitor my engine oil temperature, transmission temperature, coolant temperature, air intake temperature and battery voltage. But it has Hundreds of options for monitoring so it’s very versatile. And it can read/clear trouble codes.

Damn that copper ppm is definitely higher than mine! (6ppm at 25k). Sure is taking its sweet time to clear out!
