I’m skeptical about my State Farm plan covering off-roading on a private property—need to check but don’t want to call them and ask. I take it to Rausch Creek Offroad park frequently. Never really worried about it as I could learn to deal with dents and broken parts; however, I never really thought about the fact that my 2019 Pro could be easily totaled on a normal trail ride. My last trip on a Blue trail ride a guy in a wrangler 3 trucks behind me rolled his off a 8’ dropoff due to sun glare and potentially the edge of the trail collapsing. We weren’t sure. I had my driver side tires within 6” of the lip and made it (there was a tree on the pass side pinching down the trail). I think his rig was likely totaled; he was OK. This also opened my eyes to injuries that can happen to my passengers...my kids and friends. Kind of a scary. Still love off-roading but I definitely make sure everyone is always wearing seat belts and i’m now more aware of random the crap that can happen.

Some of just the Moab trails I took my 4runner on, while it still had a car note:
Moab Rim, Behind the Rocks, Rose Garden Hill, Poison Spider, Golden Spike/Bar, Steel Bender, Cliff Hanger, etc.

2018 SR5. Stock. BFG All Terrain T/A KO2s, OEM size. Yes, I do take it off road. Nothing precarious, but do get the axles articulated now and then. And it’s pinstriped.

Yes, on most of the trails in Western Colorado between Ouray and Silverton. I don't do Black Bear or Poughkeepsie, but all the others are fair game. If you get stuck out in the middle of nowhere, it will coast a fortune for someone to come pull you out, i.e. the road side assistance that most insurance companies provide does not cover "off road" rescues, but other off road people are really good about helping others out of a jam. You do have to be careful -- seems every year someone rolls their rig off the narrow Ophir pass road.

I agree. I would keep it simple if it was a lease. Took my wife and son out to the local mountains and had a blast. Going with a group and good spotters is key for more difficult trails.

You may want to get some Goat Armor. Works pretty good. I used it on my last two trips to avoid the annoying pinstripes. Pricey but better than constantly polishing. If mine wasnt black id probably make due without it, but man do pinstripes pop on black!

You can get dents, dings, and scratches enjoying the vehicle as designed on your terms.
Or, you can get dents, dings, and scratches in the supermarket parking lot.
Or keep it a pristine garage queen.
Mine acquired "Arizona pinstripe" on the way home from the dealer. Now has a bit of rock rash.

Nice Rig! I checked the GOAT armor out starting about a year or more ago. I like the concept, but did not want to keep removing and putting it back on. They have a new version that is suppose to be better and stay on longer. I will probably get some after I have scratched the paint up so much that I want to cover it. I think it looks cool and gives the vehicle character. Although, my scratches do so too.

My worse flaw is a bad dent in the driver's door from a parking lot. More noticeable than any of the other blemishes. I also have another one on the drivers side from hitting a full size bedliner on the freeway at 70. Driver in front of me dangerously swerved at the last second and I was up against the K rail with someone to my right. Luckily I was in the 4Runner. Hit it hard with the left side tire and skid plate and it went flying out from underneath, put a good dent in the lower rear door, even with sliders, and almost flew over the K rail into opposing lanes.

Yes. If it’s your daily driver, you don’t subject it to too much risk. If it’s not your daily driver then it qualifies as a toy, and you don’t finance it.
As for the notion of “Why buy it if you’re not going to use it,” there’s a complimentary bit of reasoning. “It’s better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.”
A lot comments have been made that carry assumptions about the nature of what off-roading should be and to what use a 4Runner should be put. There are many for whom the challenge is traversing rated trails with a high degree of difficulty. There are others who, rather than going on a “4WD trip” where the obstacle is the destination, have a destination in mind that requires 4WD to get to. There’s room in the 4Runner world for both types of people. Beating the crap out of your truck is one’s prerogative. But it’s ludicrous to imply that if you are not willing to beat up your truck then you get demoted to mall-crawler status.
