Here’s my set up: Japanese hand grinder with ceramic burs, insulated french press on my overpriced fanboi Rigd swing out table. Pre grinding and sealing your beans prior to camping never made sense to me as the beans deteriorate the moment you grind them, regardless of how well you store them.

Fresh Coffee Kit for the Trail

I have the Jetboil French Press but when I don’t feel like making a mess I just use Altitude Coffee pour over kits. Really easy and almost zero clean up.

Same here: AeroPress, Jetboil and fresh ground coffee.

I camp in very cold temps often. Take one of those free koozies you have in your cooler and cut the bottom off. It fits perfect on the Aeropress to help hold in the heat while coffee seeps. IF you have one of the older neoprene ones they clean up easily when dirty!

Man so many options to get my caffeine fix on the trail. Loving some of these setups.

I took this one on an 11 day drop camp elk hunt, it was awesome and made excellent coffee. Lightweight as well.

The older I get, the less effort I want to put into fancy eating and the gear one has to carry to fix it. For me a decent cup of coffee in the boonies entails boiling some water and dropping in instant Starbucks, which comes in different strengths to suit your taste.

Old fashioned: I have an old Coleman single burner stove with an old stainless steel percolator (without guts!). Fill the night before=first person up lights it on the way to the outhouse. Use Folger's Instant (unless I can find the Maxwell House coffee bags) since some people may want tea or hot chocolate. Besides, I want coffee, not foo foo stuff in the A.M.!

BTW: I drink Deadman's Reach by Raven's brew Coffee from Alaska exclusively while at home: "Served In Bed, Raises The Dead!"

"THE STORY BEHIND DEADMAN'S REACH® COFFEE
Deadman Reach is a shoal along Baranof Island in Peril Strait in the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska. We thought Deadman’s Reach® sounded like coffee and were inspired to design this special high-speed blend of very rare coffees for:

Jump-starting Your Mornings,
Long-Haul Trucking,
Cramming For Exams,

Graveyard Shifts,
Deadlines,
States of Absolute Bliss,
and Pure Coffee Pleasure."

Coffee service for 2...

Fresh Coffee Kit for the Trail-equipment-jpg

MSR WindBurner stove
Knock Feld47 grinder
Yeti 10 oz Rambler mugs
Sea-to-Summit X-Brew drippers
Kalita filters
Coffee scoop
Mini Bic

Packed in a Step 22 Mini Stingray case, with plenty of room left for beans:

Fresh Coffee Kit for the Trail-case-open-jpg
Fresh Coffee Kit for the Trail-case-closed-jpg

Sometimes we will forego the grinder and pre-grind at home. Or, in a pinch, just take Kuju pour-over packets, Voila instant, or Starbucks Via.

In cold weather pour over isn't ideal because by the time the water fully drains through the filter it has lost a lot of heat. I rely on basically two methods, Starbucks instant packs using a kettle to get the water really hot or if I'm willing to put in the effort is an old school stove top percolator coffee pot. Just don't over cook it and it tastes great and is also really hot.

I will second on what Fourrunnererbill said. A percolator is the way to go in cold weather but not always the most convenient for one or two people but great for a group. Besides that some great gear and advice in here. Many Thanks!

Said good coffee to the percolator: "You just don't understand me!"

But coffee for a group is a whole other thing.

I'm a Moka pot guy myself. Works great for cold weather coffee and brews a great cup of coffee every time. And for those of you that camp at altitude the Moka pot helps with the lower boiling point at high altitudes. It's hard to get a hot cup of coffee at 11,000 feet. (Water boils at 192 degrees at 11,000 feet. Far below the ideal extraction temperature for coffee.) Also available in multiple sizes! Get a stainless steel model ideally.

Yeah I know you pour over and press guys and girls don't like percolator or drip coffee but for camping it's a bullet proof good cup of coffee.

Jetboil

I’ve tried various methods. Jetboil gets the water hot very fast and retains the heat due to the cloth sleeve. Also use their French press kit so the coffee stays hot during the brew. Jetboil isn’t cheap but if you’re a REI member wait for the 20 or 30% coupons and use your member points and it’s not a bad deal.
