We have factory nav. Used it one time. Try wireless Carplay/ Android Auto or just use the phone.

If using Google Maps, download Offline Maps. I download offline maps for my home area and anywhere I go on vacation. It makes normal navigation faster. Phone will not mention it lost cell service. It may mention service restored. Offline maps allows the device to keep going at all times.

On pavement I use waze app on iphone. Offroad I use gaia gos on ipad. The factory nav is subpar to either of those.

I almost never use the factory navigation. Unless your going to factory one very cheap. I would just go with an aftermarket solution.

^^Ditto this^^

I use it all the time, they (cell apps vs built in NAV) perform the exact same function.
Enter the destination and it tells you how to get there.

Lock out while in motion is easy to disable with all the various products posted all over this forum.............

The last part isn't a great selling point, since with Carplay you can have the map up and show your audio.

True, so I'm not sure why he included that. I have a 2012 so mine doesn't do split screen.

No, you are not alone, I like the stock nav. The built-in wiring and outdoor antenna make it much better than the hand-held unit or phone, not to mention the troublesome of hanging the unit. I do not like the aftermarket android head unit either.

Audio Software Update of Mar 23, 2017

Audio Software Update Ver. 0101D7 & 0101157 dated Mar 23,2017 could resolve most if not all of your issues with the OEM Entune Audio System.

This software update with instructions on how to download and install it are available at the toyota.com/owners website.

Since I have installed this software update on my 2014 4Runner Limited with Entune Premium Audio-Navigation System, the OEM Audio-Navigation System in it doesn't quit and restart any more.

Mine does a great job of navigating around Corpus Christi.... It never shows me being on any actual roads, and I am in Austin at the time, but other than those minor details it's fine.

I bought my ‘18 SR5 used and it came with navigation. Like others, I have a love/hate relationship with it. But I regularly use it. I keep my home screen split three ways, map, phone, Bluetooth music.

My vehicle was equipped with navigation, but it didn’t work when I drove it home from the lot. I got a message there was no SD card. The dealer wouldn’t provide one, wanted $160 for the card, so bought it on ebay from an Arizona dealer for $60. It was the 2018 version maps and was plug and play. I unpackaged and installed the card at the post office, booted the system and got maps immediately. As well, the direction reading in the information screen by the temperature readout was also reading actual direction instead of only “N”.

The unit works fine. I use it on trips to unfamiliar places. On a trip to central Idaho I was 200 miles from a dinner date and programmed the destination and it was spot on as to the ETA. Maps are not as pretty as the Garmin in my Subaru, but does the job. My biggest gripe is it not having the names of many side streets at default zoom. Irritating at night when you want to know where to turn ahead of time because around here signs are old and often missing.
