Adding factory navigation
Hello, looking at a 2015 SR5 4Runner for the wife. It does not have navigation included. Normally I would slap in a aftermarket unit with nav but the wife wa ts to keep the factory look. What do I need to add factory nav to this SR5? Is there a way to unlock it on the current system? Add a module in the dash? Replace with a factory unit that has nav installed? If I replace with another factory head unit is there anything else that is needed or nust swap the headunits?
Thank you for any help.

just my .02 but the factory nav sucks to use. it's cumbersome/clunky to input directions and super annoying to try and use when not fully stopped. it's fine for glancing at the map to not miss a turn or whatever at times but zooming and moving around the screen is a PITA and I just use google maps on my phone through bluetooth 10/10 times for nav.
It's better than nothing but given your situation I wouldn't recommend installing it over an aftermarket unit.

And FWIW there might be more info out there that implies it's an easier install than this thread suggests, but here's a thread where the OP was looking to do the same and decided it was too big of a headache to install the factory nav in a non-nav vehicle:
Need help in buying factory navigation unit

I glance at mine from time to time but never use it for actual navigation. As stated previously, it is seriously flawed and a phone works much better in all circumstances I have encountered. Buy and install a nice phone mount instead.

thank you both for the replays and info. I agree that adding an aftermarket double din with Nav is the best way to go, but the wife really wants a factory setup so I wanted to try to give her want she wants. It looks like it will be alot more hassle that its worth. Maybe I can convince her to go with an aftermarket setup if I tell her I'll put screens in the head rest off of a DVD player in the dash that has a Nav system. At least the daughter and friends will like that on long trips.

I have factory nav and I use google maps on my phone 99.99% of the time - it's just that much better. Factory nav only gets used when I'm out of cell service and didn't download the maps for where i was going ahead of time.
If you really, really want it, I'd look for a head unit from a salvage yard. A new one will run you $4-5k.

Factory nav is weak, just replaced mine with a Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX w/ wireless carplay and wireless android, it's a huge upgrade over the stock system.

Ebay.
Like others have said, the OEM Navigation unit does have more cons then pros but personally, i use it for long road trips where I don't have want to rely on my phone. It is great for Point to Point over 100 miles IMO.

Most annoying thing is you back out a couple of notches and most of the roads disappear.

On my 2020 nav is extremely easy.
Touch voice command.
Say
Get directions to so and so. Easy even a democrat can do it.
Trade it in for a 2020 and move on with life.

Factory Nav
I will be putting the factory Nav from my 2018 ORP up for sale this weekend.
I decided to go the aftermarket route and am having it installed as I type this.
Shoot me a PM if interested.

I may be a minority but I like the factory nav system and use it all the time. Especially in northern Michigan and Ontario where cell phone reception often is not available. Sure, it is not the best available but I like the stock dash look and it is easy to switch between audio and navigation.
