window issue.. is this normal?

noticed this a while back but thought i'd ask if anyone else noticed this issue.. so with the back door windows about 3/4 way down, if i place my hand on the window, i can move the glass side to side. this only happens on my rear doors and both fronts dont move at all. thinking about bringing it up on my next service with toyota.

Mine does the same thing. I lower the windows to clean the very top and it too moves side to side, about 1/4” play on each side. It’s not a snug fit as you would expect from a window. When fully closed, no movement at all.

I’m approaching 30k, I may take it in, or try to inspect myself.

Definitely not normal for a window to move that way.

If you need luxury car quality fit and finish, you should have bought a Lexus. People expect far too much from a vehicle that is damn near an economy car if you look at the price relative to what new cars, on average, sell for today.

You can barely buy a base model F-150 (with 4x4) for what a Limited or TRD Pro 4Runner costs. These trucks are awesome looking, reliable, and proven, but high end vehicles they are not. If anyone told you otherwise, you were sold a bill of goods.

This is a completely false statement on several accounts.

#1. The average price for a new car(any new car) sold in the United States in 2018 was $35,742. Proof:
Average transaction price for new car more than $35K in 2018, analysts say - mlive.com

#2. In a 100 mile radius from Columbus Ohio(my location), there is one new Toyota 4Runner for sale for less than the average new car price stated above. Proof, search Cars.com.

#3. In a 100 mile radius of Columbus Ohio(my location), there are 973 brand new 4WD Ford F-150's for sale between $40k and $50K. Proof, search Cars.com.

Same here, I haven't had the panel off yet to try and address the issue.

But we have to be honest that the "window rattle" has been an issue for years, so this is no different just less noise which is progress.

Window Glass Rattle Fix

my advice to all is to not close the door with the window in that position or you will be making it worse.

This has been the case since the 2nd gen 4Runner. The window is not held in place by anything internally when it's half way down. The front windows have a vertical edge that remains in the window track. The rear one does not. So it's kinda floppy when it's half way down. I don't think there's any reason to worry about it. The rear window in my 1996 4Runner still worked normally at 220k miles. And it was the same way.

only reason i brought it up was because we just purchased a 2019 sienna xle premium and the driver rear sliding door window does the same but the passenger side does not move side to side at all. so im definitely bringing the sienna back in to have it checked out.

I read a Taco thread where the dealer put a seal or guide in the channel which fixed it and he said it happened again 200 miles later.

So I think a permanent fix is possible once we understand the issue, I just wish the panels were easier to take off like my old 92 haha

It would be cool if you report back with the service notes.

I must have rented over 30 different cars over the last two years for travel. Why is it too much to expect no rattles or wind noise from a Toyota 4Runner or RAV4 when cars from other manufacturers don't have the same issues on lesser vehicles?

Why do we need to buy a Lexus when some of these 4Runners MSRP in the mid 40s which aren't that much less than a base RX?

This is my first Toyota in a loooong while and I'd say folks need to quit making excuses for Toyota.

I’m sure Toyota has superb engineers but fixing window rattling is not major money especially on. $45k truck my BMW X5 was about the same price it felt like it craved from granite but cost more to fix shit then it was worth hence the $45k Toyota

Every vehicle line has its issues, in the grand scheme this is minor considering this issues seem to span all of their vehicles across multiple generations.

There are no excuses only repairs, for all we know the lexus part is the same and the owners just never crack the window and close the door.

As for the engineering team, I'm sure they were all focused on the Supra release. haha
