Driving with a flat-Replace or Good to Go?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing the low pressure tire sensor appear starting the 4runner....Thought nothing of it due to it finally getting cold in my neck of the woods and drove 60-70 mph for 20 min to come back and see I was running on 10 psi and a flat....

Noticed a screw in the wheel, pumped the wheel back up to 34 psi to take it to the tire store and have the screw removed/tire patched.

They did not indicate that I needed a new tire, but seemed awfully rushed. How can I tell if there was any damage done re-inflating the tire with the screw in it/driving it at those speeds with such low psi? Not sure if I need to replace or roll with the patched tire now.

You would have needed to see the inside of the tire to tell for sure. That is assuming no obvious signs of damage on the outside. Often times tires ran low on pressure will chew up from the inside with no signs of damage on the outside. That being said it’s usually lower pressures than your talking but every tire is different. What kind of tire ? How many ply side wall? These are definitely going to play a role. But in a nutshell without a proper inspection no one can tell you anything.

Did they dismount the tire and do a plug/patch the proper way?

As long as the nail/screw wasn't within an inch or so of the sidewall, plugging is totally fine and will last the rest of the life of the tire.

Check the sidewall of the tire and see if there is a ring the entire way around. If there is, I would replace. This ring happens when the tire is driven on when flat, and basically destroys the sidewall from the inside of the tire.

most tire shops will try to sell you a new tire if there is even any question of it being an issue.

That tire is unsafe you chewed up the tire inside so the side wall will not be able to withstand the heat generated on the highway

I was posting that picture as an example for him to check. That's not his tire....

The problem is that nobody knows. Short of x-raying the tire, there is no way of determining what damage was done internally to the tire. A visual check (inside or outside) won't tell you anything.

How many miles are on the tires? I'd certainly replace that one and (unless the tires were near new) at least the other one on that axle.

That tire could be a catastrophic failure waiting to happen. There is no way to tell.

Driving with a flat-Replace or Good to Go?

I drove on a flat BF mud terrain which is a load C but supposed to be strong as shit. Tire guys looked at it and it was toast. I did less than 5 miles. But it was also FLAT flat. Zero psi.

Dust on the right is rubber being chewed up.

Here's the metal I picked up.

Bottom line: I wouldn't chance it. Sucks, but not worth the risk. If you don't already have a full sized spare, get 2 new ones for that axle and mount the remaining good tire on the spare rim. Then you have a good full size spare also. And keeps tire rotations a little more easy to follow.
