Depends how the truck is used. The plate will accumulate dirt, mud and snow. If you just want for looks, parking lots, etc. then plate it.
I’ve got BudBuild and even when the kid was young she figured out how to use it as a step quickly enough.

^^^This... All manner of stuff will accumulate under the tread plate. Clay is a real chore. For that reason, I did not get a tread plate on my RCI sliders, and both my girls get in and out just fine.

I have the same BudBuilt with kickout but with full tread plate. Can confirm accumulation of dirt, etc. Normally the accumulation isn't too terrible (YMMV), and the plate is helpful for my dog.

lol douchy remark. Exactly, it accumulates no more than your undercarraige. Sometimes kids figure it out faster than dogs... sometimes they don't
80% that buy them plated or not never leave the road

i'd also argue that it would be easier to roughly clean mud etc that has accumulated under your sliders than it would be to fully clean mud, etc. off that has dried on the doors such that it doesnt show residual after a wash.

You want with plated huh?
Seriously, I’ll push back just a tiny bit on the undercarriage thing because even my open sliders get mucked up with crap much more than underneath.

Have with partial steps.
Between my frame and the pinch weld gets pretty munged, easily as much as my sliders, they self clean pretty well unless its that red clay sticky crap. The rest stays pretty decent unless I belly out on blobby breakovers.
I'll say blowing down gravel roads they have saved me from serious pepper jobs, the bottomside of the frame and sliders are pocked.

My RSG angled sliders without top plates collected plenty of mud and allowed a lot of mud to sling up on the doors. This photo was taken about 30 minutes into a full day off road in muddy conditions.
The flat sliders with plates that I replaced them with collect a bunch of mud as well, but protect the doors better in addition to providing a better place to step.
Either way, you’re cleaning a bunch of mud off your 4runner at the end of the day if you’re doing it right.

I have Mobtown with full plate. I still need that step area as I am a caretaker of an elderly family member.

Sliders
I did the Victory 4X4 sliders on the wifes 2020. They have a small plate at the doors, but not full length. Since this is her for work ride, she wanted protection for the weekend, but wanted something that she could easily use to get into the vehicle in dress shoes.

RCI 5 degree sliders with step plate. I ordered directly from them and the black powdercoat was excellent. I then had a local company powdercoat the red on the step plate. I think it looks good and functions as a step for my daughter to get in the back seat and to give me good access to the roof.

I went with the Victory 4x4 sliders to replace the RSG sliders in my photo above (5 posts back) and they’re definitely more practical every day for getting in and out of my 2019 Runner.

Personally, I love the 0 degree that we offer, instead of the angle ones, provides more functionally! 2014-2020 Toyota 4Runner Rock Sliders– Cali Raised LED
