Not optimal, but they do provide protective clear decals to put under them to protect the paint.

no prob. here's a look at how I have it spaced out, but keep in mind this is because we're currently using it 100% for carrying our Thule box.



i should point out that in the current front bar position, we have enough aero buffeting at 70+ mph up there that with the fairing extended out, it was vibrating up and down and actually tapping the roof sheetmetal. by pushing it back on its mounting adjustments it took out enough movement that it not longer does that at any speed or over any terrain. i DON'T think its a problem with the product, just an anomoly of the aero at that speed with the fairing in that exact position. elsewhere, it may not have that issue.



i don't mind having to buy 3 bars. in the future i may push the middle bar further back to accommodate different gear loads at which point i might need to utilize the front bar too.

Is that the aluminum or steel crossbar? I'm planning on getting the steel version next month.

Does the faring help wind noise , i have 4 crossbars mounted like that and its duper noisy

These are the ruggedized steel units. If I was running 4-5 bars i might have considered the alu ones to keep weight off the highest point of the vehicle, but for 2 or 3 bars steel felt like a great deal.

yes it does. we had roaring and resonance that would come in hard at about 50 and 70mph, both speeds we cruise at often. the fairing eliminated it all. i think the "C-channel" shape of the bars makes this especially problematic although I think its a worthy tradeoff for the height, strength, mounting options and cost.

You can always just find a box you like and bolt is down. This should give you and idea.

By the way, just want to point out to people looking at this thread that this bar configuration DOES NOT work with the Yakima Skybox 16. The clamps are a certain shape where you cant both clear the front wind fairing and open the rear hatch door. If you want the LFD wind fairing, you need a thile box.

It seems it does work with thule boxes, so I'll try that now.

Just bought 2018 LTD and it did not come with crossbars. I plan on a roofbox, would there be clearance problems above the antenna? The OEM crossbars mount midway on the rails. If so, maybe raised Thule crossbars that mount around the rails would raise the box? Has anyone dealt with this?

I would recommend thule crossbars over OEM (I have thules). If you need more of a platform LFD will work with stock side rails. Thule will sit up higher and clear the antenna no issues with a thule cargo box. LFD may clear the sharkfin antenna if you have a box with a cutout for the fin. I have seen a couple post here that they were able to fit cargo boxes (I think Yakima) on LFD bars.

Just wanted to make my contribution, as this forum has been incredibly helpful.

2018 SR5 4Runner with 2 LFD Crossbars - was able to mount a Yakima CBX18 rooftop box. Mounted fully forward - clears the shark fin antenna with ~3/4" clearance. I did however have to slide the front crossbar fully fwd (so no wind fairing, for now) in order for the front claws to properly grasp the crossbar. Can get photos if people are are interested.

Noise: not too bad, still able to hold a conversation (I hardly drive over 75)
MPG: lost about 1.5 mpg after the addition of crossbars and cargo box.

Check out my setup on Pages 100 and 101. Fairing is a must.
The LFD Off Road Thread

I've had a similar issue getting my Yakima Skybox hooked up with my LFD Crossbars. The LFD Crossbars definitely have better height than stock and would keep the box clamps/feet from scraping the roof, but I couldn't get the built in Yakima clamps to wrap around the crossbars. Did anyone ever get that to work? I ended up having to swap back to the factory crossbars to get it to work, but the fit is mighty tight.

Trying to understand, do you mean you couldn't get the skybox's jaws open or closed enough around the LFD bars or you have their fairing and it gets in the way? I use my Skybox 16 on the LFD bars and it's solid as hell!

Thanks for the reply. The issue is I wasn't able to get the skybox jaws to close (I wasn't using the fairing up front yet either, just 2 LFD cross bars). The jaws open up enough, but I could never get the jaws to snap back to the closed position. User error on my part?
