Touchscreen problems

I've seen a lot of references to this issue, and it seems that a lot of posters had entire systems replaced under warranty. But there are a LOT of these posts without any resolution.

I just bought a 2016 Trail Premium and the top right of the screen doesn't respond to touch. So the "Source" or "Return" button doesn't work.

I have a 90 day warranty, but I'd like to know if these are fixable, or if they're just replaced?

I bet that's not cheap.

Also, I bet I'm gonna get some pushback from the dealer on this.

Just to update, I loaded the latest firmware (which I'm pretty sure had already been done) and it seems to be working right now. I'm not 100% sure that the update really did anything. But the button definitely works now, but also seems to need a very specific touch which is easy in the driveway and probably not as easy bouncing down the road.

My man,

I just picked up a 2018 Limited few months ago and needless to say I dislike the head unit. This is coming from an '07 owner so I'm already looking into replacing the head unit with a Pioneer or something like that. The Entune thing is so annoying and the nav. system is not the same as Google's so the routes used by the nav. is longer vs routes inputted on a smartphone using Google's or Apple maps. At that point I realized I'd need to upgrade the head unit eventually.

I'm not surprised you're having problems with yours, the head unit is a POS. I respect Toyota for wanting to stay true to 4Runner nation by keeping majority of controls old-school but they could have done a better job on the head unit but that was before I found out they already had a solution in place for next gen 4Runner!

You should probably do the same if you plan to keep the truck long-term instead of a few years of leasing.

I had the same problem with my 2017 SR5. The top-right area of the touchscreen quit working but would only occasionally respond to being touched. The dealership replaced it with no issue.

Yeah, so I bought it from Carmax, which has a 90 day warranty. It's out of Toyota warranty (barely). I've bought at least 5 cars from Carmax in the past, so I'm hoping that they treat me right on this if it needs to be replaced. But I've found retail pricing for a replacement online - it's freaking $4K. That's going to be a tough kitn for Carmax. Given the option, I'd probably happily settle with them for about half that, which should easily cover the cost of a good aftermarket, like Anonymous mentioned above.

Carmax is sending it out to have the touchscreen repaired by an independent shop. I'm a bit skeptical, but the SM has a high level of confidence in this guy. Said he wouldn't take the job if he wasn't sure that he could fix it. I guess we'll see...

There was someone on this board that repaired the digitizer. I recall it was not expensive. Did take some know how.

No way would I pay OEM retail for replacement. I'd buy whatever fits the budget at Crutchfield.

Mine does this sporadically too...I'm close to 36k on the odometer, so I'm thinking I will take it into the dealer and see what they say, but my guess is they will put up a fight about replacing it.

So here we are 10 days after I left it with Carmax and it's been BS responses and delays. I'm about at my limit - especially after the SM didn't return my call on Friday (on Wednesday he was pretty confident that it would be done). So I called Saturday morning (Service department was closed, but the business office was open) and was told it was ready. Drove 40 minutes over there to find it with a gaping hole in the dash. And they still can't give me an estimated completion date. We're going to have a come to Jesus today.

Picked it up last week and everything seems to be ok. I didn't get to talk with the service rep so I'm not exactly sure what was done to fix it. During the previous conversations, he said that their sub-contractor would replace the screen. And that's about the extent of what I know.

I went thru 5 screens on 2 different 4runners. Usually the bottom left died. Therefore, no down channel changer on the radio and no destination on the nav. Most replaced under warranty, but I paid for one, equipment only and then they wanted $1400 for a new system. One tech finally admitted that that screens cannot be re aligned. I think that he meant the buttons that you push stray from their original position. (Definitely not sure about that explanation, but it makes sense). Very frustrating that such a minor problem cause such a major headache. No solution to the problem

Same thing with my ‘18 SR5 with navigation. Return button unresponsive. Didn’t know it was a common defect until I read this thread. Since the steering wheel has a return button, I immediately resorted to using it instead of the onscreen button. I still have warranty left, but doubt I’ll have a dealer replace it, since the three nearby Toyota dealers are 170 miles southwest (Reno), 250 miles north (Boise) and 127 miles east (Elko).
