SOOOO much better. The drone at when downshifting on express way was killing me.
Did you cut and swap the flanges? I'm pretty sure the stock one uses a 2-bolt flange and the TRD one uses a 3-bolt flange (post muffler).

You are correct. Yes, the muffler shop cut the flange off the TRD one and welded it to the stock one. My intent was to keep the trd muffler and have the shop source or order a 3 bolt flange. They promised to call be before doing the work and they did not....anyways they did exactly what i did not want them to do. They ended up not charging me, so we both got shorted lol. in the end exhaust are fairly cheap so no big deal.

I traded a 2018 TRD Pro for a 2021. I hate the exhaust on the ‘21. Volume is fine but the drone is super annoying. I like loud exhausts on sports cars but this thing sounds so much worse than the 2018. I asked my SA if he thought I could just get an exhaust for an ‘18 to put on the ‘21. He did not think it was possible. I’d love to make the change to a standard exhaust but this thread is full of talk about welding and flanges…. Seems like I might have to just live with it.

I really liked the sound of the pro exhaust until i drove uphill along side a Lunar Rock pro. Didn’t realize both our trucks were struggling so much until I heard the other guy’s exhaust, pronouncing our revs and shift points to the rest of the world lol. Ignorance was bliss.

I’m open to the trade if we can get someone trustworthy to do the work. However, you’ll have to take my running boards as well ;)

An update to my early September post above. The TRD exhaust now has around 6,500 miles on it. About a month ago, I installed about 9 square feet of 1/8" thick of mass loaded vinyl (MLV) on the cargo area floor. Luxury Liner: Mass Loaded Vinyl Sheets - Second Skin Audio

For the install, I removed the plastic trim piece on the floor near the rear door, lifted the carpet, floor panel, and styrofoam panel and then cut the MLV to fit the bare metal floor. I used spray adhesive to secure the MLV.

I have to say, either the exhaust continues to quiet down and/or the MLV took the edge off the exhaust. It is now quite acceptable during driving, even up hills on a downshift. The worst audible range of the TRD exhaust was 2500-3000rpms under load while going up a hill. It would resonant and boom the cabin if the rpms stayed within this range. This is still the loudest operating range of the exhaust, but it doesn't resonant and boom the cabin.

It's a relief because I was a bit worried taking the family on longer trips with a loud exhaust. That's no longer a worry. I actually somewhat like the sound now.
My quest to quiet this TRD Pro continues. My wife loves the sound and won't part with it.

I've now done the following:

1) Stuff loose towels she had in the cargo area into the passenger side storage cubby behind the wheel arch.

2) Added approximately 16 square feet of 1/8" thick of MLV with a 3/8" foam backing (~$140; Luxury Liner Pro™ Sheet - MLV + Foam) under the cargo area and back seat. You do have to remove some 14mm bolts adhering the seat and center seatbelt mounts to the body and pop the rear passenger door kickplates in order to get the carpet up under the seat. It takes mere 10 minutes to do all of this.

3) Added two Lexus exhaust vibration dampers (~$40/ea) to the 2.5" pipe entering the muffler and the 2.5" pipe exiting the muffler. I'm using stainless steel exhaust clamps to hold the dampers to the exhaust.

The annoying droning engine sound - Page 6 - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

After all of these modifications, the interior volume of the exhaust and the drone is quelled about 30%. The best part is that the drone and certain resonance at 2500-3000rpms under load while going up a hill is much reduced. The setup is acceptable for me now and the edge taken off.

I'm still not a fan of the TRD exhaust, but it's my wife's truck. I keep the stock exhaust boxed in the basement just in case she changes her mind. She has no idea that I did these modifications either

I cannot stand the drone of this TRD perf exhaust on my '21 TRD PRO 4runner. It resonates my head to the point that I actually let off the accelerator or manually shift gears.

Anyone having luck with a dealer swapping it for the regular exhaust? I just got rid of my 2019 TRD Pro, and it was fine with the regular exhaust. Wish they would have kept it as an optional accessory

Just put a low restriction performance resonator in. Cheap and problem solved.

Can you recommend one? Where does it get installed?

Somewhere upstream of your mufflers you’ll have a resonator most likely. You can just put another one in before or after. If you don’t like it just remove it and try more expensive options.

A decent muffler shop can hear your concerns and help.

I reached out to Toyota on social media to see if the drone has been resolved for the 2022's. I doubt they'll answer me but hey, at least I tried!

Since it designed specifically to provide more sound and be less restrictive, I’m guessing the chance of Toyota changing it to be 0%. Wouldn’t get your hopes up that they fix something they intentionally designed.
