Italian cars are the only things that rust quicker than Japanese cars.

Plus, I love sounding like the UPS truck.

'20 TRD Pro Exhaust

Swapped out my TRD exhaust for a stock one. Its the one major thing I've hated since I bought the Pro. It is definitely quieter and I didn't notice any extra exhaust smell today drying around town. I'm very happy I made this swap. I hated the noise and I also didn't notice any performance drop. I also think it looks better without that low hanging side pipe.

I have a 2021 that just hit 1000 miles. The smell is gone and quite honestly I enjoy the sound of the TRD exhaust........a lot actually. Unique vehicle with a unique powerful sound........obviously my opinion. The sound you hear from inside the vehicle is different than the sound your hear outside too. Also, for what it’s worth I do have the extra Toyota carpeted mat in the back. I do feel that helps insulate the bottom from outside sounds.

Inline 6s can sound awesome. See Alfa, BMW, Jag etc. I’ve yet, however, to find a V6 that sounds like anything but a can of marbles in the clothes dryer.

The current TRD pro exhaust sounds like a late 90’s modded Japanese car; all exhaust. Not a bad thing but not very truck-like.

I like the cold start-up but wonder if it drones for backseat passengers.

I just installed the TRD exhaust on my 21 ORP, I love the sound and notice a little more powa on the acceleration, I installed a TRD CAI with it though.

Since starting this thread over a year ago........

.........I've now put on close to 12k miles on my Pro, and have sort of gotten used to the sound of the stock exhaust. I decided not to swap it out but read some good suggestions on here.
Again, to be clear for those who think some of us are complaining about it being "too loud": I have a Shelby GT350 that I drive in sport mode, so I totally get what 'loud' is. And the sound of that exhaust is sweet music to my ears.

The issue with the TRD Pro's exhaust is the drone. After over a year, it hasn't gotten quieter, but I've simply adapted to it, b/c i love everything else about the truck, including the appearance of the exhaust itself.
I think the sound doesn't really bother me much unless -- as others have said-- I'm going up an incline/mountain.

The one thing I haven't seen on this thread: has anyone installed a resonator to reduce the drone?

I'd say the sound has mellowed out quite a bit during normal driving and isn't bothersome. However, going up a steady hill and the truck downshifts to 4th results in a significant increase in cabin exhaust volume when the rpms are in the 2500-3500rpm range. I'm shocked that Toyota would put this exhaust on a stock vehicle as it is surprisingly loud under certain load conditions. My tuned BMW M235 with downpipe and performance exhaust isn't as loud on the inside as the TRD Pro exhaust is.

My wife loves it so it stays. If it were my truck, I would have stayed with the stock system. I've learned over the years that it is very difficult to make a V6 sound good unless at full throttle and the rpms over 4,000. I told her we need to keep the stock exhaust just in case she changes her mind. I feel bad for the TRD Pro owners that don't have this option.

I think a lot of sound from the TRD exhaust is a resonating/amplifying effect caused by rear luggage area. I do wonder if the sound could be reduced by sound deadening and/or the back loaded with gear.
An update to my early September post above. The TRD exhaust now has around 6,500 miles on it. About a month ago, I installed about 9 square feet of 1/8" thick of mass loaded vinyl (MLV) on the cargo area floor. Luxury Liner: Mass Loaded Vinyl Sheets - Second Skin Audio

For the install, I removed the plastic trim piece on the floor near the rear door, lifted the carpet, floor panel, and styrofoam panel and then cut the MLV to fit the bare metal floor. I used spray adhesive to secure the MLV.

I have to say, either the exhaust continues to quiet down and/or the MLV took the edge off the exhaust. It is now quite acceptable during driving, even up hills on a downshift. The worst audible range of the TRD exhaust was 2500-3000rpms under load while going up a hill. It would resonant and boom the cabin if the rpms stayed within this range. This is still the loudest operating range of the exhaust, but it doesn't resonant and boom the cabin.

It's a relief because I was a bit worried taking the family on longer trips with a loud exhaust. That's no longer a worry. I actually somewhat like the sound now.

BMW own here. Inline 6s sound glorious, especially a turbo one with an exhaust. The motors are incredibly smooth too.

As for a good sounding V6, the only I know of is the twin turbo V6 in the Alfa Quadrifoglio. It's perfect.

Great point about the alfa. The quadrafoglio would be my DD if it wasn't, well, an alfa. lol. The reliability issues are notorious.
But in terms of performance, there may not be a better value .............buddy who drove it before I could described the sound and feel as that of a 4 door Ferrari (not sure if he meant a 488)

And before my Shelby, I owned a 2019 M2 with the TT V6.......it sounded ok, but didn't enthrall me anywhere close to the way the Shelby does.
