2023 4runner
The Dec 2019 issue of 4 wheel and off road magazine says that the next generation of Toyota pickups and suv's will be built on a common body on frame platform. The Tundra will be first in 2021 followed by the Tacoma and 4runner in 2023. I guess they are going to milk out our dinosaur 5th gens another 3 years.

Here we go. Speculation or sales strategy to make people want to buy the body on frame 5th Gen before its gone Either way let's start the madness.

I have read that on other auto magazine sites as well. Just like there has been speculation about a diesel engine. it would be a blow to the 4runner fan base not sure about the tundra because it might make it more gas friendly.

They just did a late cycle refresh so yea, they aren't going to upgrade anytime soon. They may be waiting for the next election results before they do anything. Dem gets elected and the gas mileage requirements will increase significantly which could kill off the 4Runner all together. Maybe the 4Runner would be grandfathered in and they just keep selling the 5th generation. Who knows.

They could still build it at Tahara and just export it everywhere BUT the U.S. without changing it until sales fall off and they discontinue it alltogether.

Cool story. Probably best posted in the Sixth Gen forum, eh? That section is starving for content.

I’d like to see a modified 4 door version of the 1st gen. A removable top option would be nice too.

2018 139.694
2017 128.296
2016 111.952
2015 97.034
2014 76.906
2013 51.625
2012 48.753
2011 44.316
2010 46.531
Not sure how 2019 numbers will look, but I think Toyota will be milking this as much as they can.

The Land Cruiser 300 is coming so that will be the best clue on the direction they are thinking since the 4R is basically a reskinned LC Prado

Toyota is not dumb milking it out for everything its worth. All the tech in the new stuff is expensive to fix and will break. As long as petrol is low they'll keep making it.

Petrol hasn't been low in CA for about a year, and the last 3+ months has been bad.
I sold my 2018 TRD OR for a 2019 Accord Hybrid (232+ lbft torque and all my favorite trails have paved roads getting you to or near the trailhead)... so their stalling is def having an impact.
I drive 24k miles a year, mostly for adventures, and the switch is saving me on the order of $300/mo.
So they should get the 6th gen here fast, or their sales will get brutalized. As it is, you can save $50+ a month in gas if you drive a lot like me and simply go with a a variety of other mid or large offroad trucks/suvs, most of which are getting low or mid 20s mpg, vs the 4runnerr's putrid 15-19 depending on modsl
