What I miss...

I just traded a 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 5.7L, 101K miles, towing package, FT4WD and leather for a 2016 Trail Premium with 25K miles. After a week of ownership, here's what I miss:

- the power (can't say this enough)
- remote start (even though it's not really cold yet)
- much better media interface
- favorite songs/artists notifications (really nice option)
- single stalk and better steering wheel controls
- the power
- less road noise
- digital coolant and oil temps, oil pressure, transmission temp, tire psi
- better on-road behavior
- 7500 lbs of towing capacity

I don't regret the purchase much at all. On the Jeep, I had to replace a radiator (and hoses), exhaust manifold gasket and both front and rear driveshafts (because they don't sell a separate u-joint). But it had gobs of power. It also threw stupid little codes pretty often, which is why I eventually tired of the power and, after 25 years of Jeep ownership, decided to buy a Toyota.

It's not a V8, but I added an intake and exhaust for power and an Accessorides plug and play remote starter and am plenty happy with my truck.

I don't think I'm allowed to like posts yet, but I would.

Sure, it's way more reliable. But it's almost 100 hp and 130 ft lbs. That's a LOT.

Oh, and I forgot dual climate control. In fact, it's not really the dual thing - it's more just the climate control. You set a temp and never have to mess with it again. That's really nice, isn't it?

edited to add that this is just an adjustment period. I really like the Toyota and I'm sure I'm gonna love it 5 years from now.

The Limited has most of those features, dual climate control, etc. You have to pay for the bells and whistles with the 4Runner. What I like with 4Runners is I can add most of the features aftermarket that I want

I'm between 4R and GC

Really like the Grand Cherokee, but love the 4R for reliability. I'm leaning toward the 4R, but not 100% sure.

After all the crappy transmission issues that Jeeps/Chryslers/Dodge had in the 90's and 2000's I personally would never buy one. I've owned 3 4Runners and never had 1 single mechanical issue with any of them, says a lot about Toyota's reliability

It's a toss up to me.

The GC is a great value. I bought mine at roughly the same age and mileage as the 4R that I just bought. And the Jeep had a V8 and many more options. It was $10K less. I mean, that's a LOT of money. And if any real towing was a consideration (3K lbs or more), there's just no competition. The Jeep wins that hands down.

I've owned 2 XJ's, 2 WJ's and a WK2 and I've probably put about 6-700K miles on them. I've had a fair share of problems with them, but never a transmission. They've left me on the side of the road a few times. But I've never had anything catastrophic happen to the drive train.

But here I am, after 25 years of Jeep ownership, with a Toyota. I'm choosing to pay $10K to avoid having to call roadside assistance.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you like the GC b/c of the more luxurious feel along with tech/features then I'd look into a GX460. I'm not sure that the GC and 4Runner get cross shopped much since they're both really different tools. The GX460 also has a bullet proof 4.6L V8.

If you're looking to build more of an off-road and adventure rig then the 4Runner is a better choice than GC and GX since it's more utilitarian, barebones, and huge aftermarket support. However I'd say the GX after market is growing and exploding right now.

If you plan to keep things stock or mild my vote is for the GX460.

Well said. And not to argue but I've seen some great built GX460s. I'm not allowed to touch the wife's

One thing not mentioned is the locking center diff. If I could start over I would have bought a used GX or Limited with this feature.

Here's a few things I really like about the GX:
  • 4WD with locking center diff
  • Cooled/Heated leather seats
  • Feels solid af
  • Quiet
  • V8

And here's a few things I don't like:
  • Barn door that swings out to the curbside
  • Entune
  • Lexus badging and chrome
  • Buying gas

A lot of those things are little things that you can remedy. Power is what it is unless you supercharge it. You can get a Sprintbooster to help it map the power better though. Media interface can be changed by a simple aftermarket radio swap. If you get remote start, make sure you don't get the OEM Toyota one. I got it for my 2012 but only because it was stupid cheap. It only runs for like 10 minutes and if you open the door the car shuts off, so you have to start it again right after.

After buying my newest 4 Runner, I let the Durango go.......and I loved the whole platform, especially the 5.9 Magnum. At 150K it had a strange trans issue that didn't get worse, but you always felt it make an odd 2-3 shift, the transfer leaked out of every possible seal, the pinion went out at 80K but the gearset was perfect, every switch in the doors failed, some more than once, radiator plastic caps popped, ECU went BOOM!, crank position sensor went in heavy traffic and had to endure the cursing of hundreds of drivers waiting for the tow.........alternator was 600 JUST for the part! On and on it went with the Engine itself being a torquey monster that is exactly what a truck needs (except for the 12-15 MPG) 11 years and 155K total with it being the top of the line and 36K and selling for $2500 bucks......89 4Runner was 22K top of the line and did 160K before foolishly selling it for 8K and spending under a grand on it to maintain it! Power is great but reliability is greater!

Not criticizing or anything, but, as my mom found out with her Jeep, they invest in gizmos more so than the things that actually matter. She has a Highlander now and is very happy about it (though it has its fair share of gizmos, but the price point was higher).

I can really appreciate the gizmos on your Jeep, Chrysler cars, other manufacturer cars have, however, for many of the models, what the spent on the gizmos they cut in other areas, all knowing the gizmos will be a selling point.

But if a person just plans on driving and dumping after three years, should be no problem except the resale takes a hit.

Agree 120%.
A buddy of mine is a diehard dodge/Ram guy. His sub-30000 mile, eco-tech diesel, highest trim level, 4x4, crew cab, blah blah blah truck has more squeaks and rattles than I could live with. ...horrible. Plus its been in the shop for at least 2 weeks worth of days on and off for serious issues......but it has a cool infotainment system and adjust air ride... What I miss...
