By the way, I’m planning to buy and install a snorkel in the next month or so.
For those of you that have snorkels, I’m curious when you are driving in heavy rain or snow if you do anything to prevent excessive water getting into the air vent or experience snow build up. Do you flip the air intake backwards or do nothing at all?
I’ve watched some installation videos and I’ve seen some people drill small holes in the air filter box to drain water from rain.
I noticed the new Tacoma snorkels by Toyota do have a cool little cut near the top that acts as a water drain. Unfortunately Toyota has made nothing for the 4Runner.
Also, what precautions do you take when going to the car wash?
Thanks

I live in New England, I have the Safari snorkel. I do not turn the head around when it snows or rains heavily. I have not had any issues. For car washes, I do sometimes use a touchless car wash. You just have to make sure the dryer in the car wash is a fixed unit. The dryers that move up and down to dry will hit the snorkel.

Hi EmotionCRZ
Thanks for this info. Just our of curiosity, so in heavy rain you never have water get into the air filter box or just not enough to create a problem?
Thanks

I'd get something like the Snorkel Upgrade Pre-cleaner. Planning on getting it for my Dobinsons snorkel sometime down the road.
Off Road Snorkel Head Air Pre-Cleaner - for Trucks, Jeeps & SUVs.

Actually, it doesn't interfere with the roof rack at all. I have this setup on mine with the full size Gobi Stealth rack (no rise option), with the wind deflector installed. The installation procedure is a little more complicated as the snorkel tube runs inside the fender well into the air box (TRD Air Box in my case), requiring the fender liner and fender trim piece to be temporarily removed for proper installation.

The air box has a drain hole in it so if water does get sucked in, it will drain there. Now I know if you are getting a snorkel for water crossings then it would only make sense to plug this hole. For me, I don't plan on major water crossings, but want a snorkel for cleaner air. Where I go its often super dusty and my filter reflects it.

Thanks Alphabeast
I don’t plan on taking it through water that deep but I figure if you’re going to put a snorkel on might as well give it that capability. I plan on adding breathers for the diffs and later waterproofing some of the electronics. I will also need to see if I can modify the modify exhaust to see if I need to make a upside down P trap if there is room.
I’ve done a deep water crossing once in my 1986 M-1044 USMC HMMWV. Nice thing about USMC vehicle they are already rigged for it. Just flip the lever to disengage the fan and drive in. Bad thing about them is they are designed flood inside while crossing so they sink to the bottoms to gain traction. My vehicle reeked for months after that. On top of that I didn’t realize my vent tube for the rear diff breather came off and filled it with water. I ended up just flushing and replacing all my fluids after that just to make sure everything was clean. So I’ll avoid deep crossings unless it’s unavoidable.

So Safari and Dobinson is a look, I get it, it's very traditional. The TJM airtec snorkel is very polarizing. The TJM has one thing going for it, it's low profile. I know thats not what your going for, but when you hit that monster flexing bicep on something your quarter panel and door may do some of their own flexing.

I personally like the looks of the TJM over the other designs.
Good thing there are choices available.

It sure doesn't look like either would fit with the 10-13 antenna. Anybody actually have one of these on a 10-13?
