My 2018 seemed soft. Had two separate emergency stops. Since then the brakes have worked great. Almost like a few small air bubbles were trapped in the system from the factory.

Hi there, I was just looking for a thread about brakes. I just got a 2017 4Runner with 34k miles. I love it, but the brakes feel a little soft to me.

The brake pedal also makes what I can only describe as a quiet "squeegee" sound when I press it during a slow stop. I test drove another 4runner and the brake pedal also made the same squeegee sound. Is this normal for the 2017/2018 4runners?

When I take my 2019 in for the 5k service, the brakes seem to grab a little for a few miles after I get it back. Then back to normal. I wonder if they are making any adjustments. (or I'm just imagining it)

When we purchased our '15 Limited used, the brakes always felt a bit spongy, and the force required to bring it to a gentle stop was not the same amount of force required to keep it at a stop (need to press harder...not how hydraulic systems should work in my mind), which always seemed weird.

I flushed the brake fluid, and it was better. Took it out on some gravel and activated the ABS a few times and flushed it again, and now it's much better. Must have had some air trapped in the system...must have been there since new.

Yeah, I've been hearing about flushing the brakes. I think I will ask about this when I bring to the dealer for a servicing in a couple of months. Thanks!

I have no idea why this works but it worked for me, and has been working for over 5 months. Modulation is better and that creeping while stoped is gone. No more putting it in neutral while in a line.
Interesting, does this train the system or the user?

The brakes are scary to me.
Rarely do I have to hit the brakes hard, but jeeze when I do it feels very unsettled, feels like a grinding sensation through the pedal, and you feel like the car might somersault forwards head over heels. Almost feels like the ABS isn't working right. Panic stops will certainly make you panic with all the hysterics the vehicle goes through. My last vehicle would stop great in panic stops, this one feels sketchy.

And the stoplight creep is so odd. When I first got it I almost rear ended a cadillac and another car at very low speed due to this. Learned to keep my foot more firmly planted on the brake pedal.

There are no adjustments to make, disc brakes self adjust.

Yup, brakes on my 17 limited have always seemed sub-optimal. I did experience the “panic stop” mode when a dog ran out in front of me. That feature worked very well, and brought me to a quick, true stop. I also owned a sports car prior to this vehicle, and, even though it was 18 years old, it had massively better, more powerful brakes. It is difficult to adjust to my wife’s car, as I frequently lurch forward when using 4runner brake pressure mode.
UPDATE:
I tried the suggested approach in an earlier post where you step on the pedal hard for 5 seconds, then repeat a few times. This actually seems to improve general brake performance.

I'll have to try this !!...tired of putting it in neutral at a stoplight...even worse when the AC is on.
