Alpine has done a good job with firmware updates to keep the head unit current.

Which speakers? In looking to do the same thing but not sure if I should get the component Kappas or separate speaker pairs for the front and if I need an amp to power the dash, front, and rear speakers.

What kind of dash speakers you using? Im using the kicker (Subaru) ones, I was considering changing them.
I did the OEM audio kit with subwoofer and can't recommend it highly enough. The sound quality is improved 10x without having to replace the head unit.

It LOOKS like adding the sub also requires the amplifier, and the complexity of the install increases significantly? How did you find the install?

I did the Subaru tweeter upgrade and just threw in a couple of inexpensive Pioneer 6X9s in the front doors that I had laying around. I found adapter brackets and plug in harnesses on Amazon that made it plug and play at that point. I was absolutely blown away by how crappy both the non jbl stock tweeter and front door speaker actually were. I've got about $150 total in both sets of speakers and the improvement is dramatic. Moral of the story being that it doesn't take much to make a big improvement over the garbage that comes stock.

I wish I could provide the details you're looking for here, but I cheated on the install. I upgraded the network security for a local auto shop for free and they installed the OEM kit for me in return. They said it was pretty easy. It took them about 4 hours.

But $2500??? I think that is the problem for most of us. I am probably going to do the same thing as the other recent poster, put the Subaru tweeters in the dash and probably focal or something similar in the front.

If you're going to spend money on good speakers up front get component speakers. woofer in the door and tweeter in the dash. better sound quality than a 3.5" in the dash and a coaxial in the door

Yes, the OEM audio kit does carry a price tag on it. BUT, I'm an audiophile and I was really dismayed by the audio quality of my new 2019 4Runner TRD ORP. I was looking at head unit replacement, individual speaker replacements, amps, all kinds of options. I did a little bit of research and what I did NOT want to do was fail to make it sound great, or reduce the overall look and feel of the truck. The thing that sold me on the OEM audio solution was that they claim it's tuned and optimized for the 4Runner as well as includes an audio-processor that can make even an old low quality MP3 sound better. That, combined with the replace every speaker solution, the audio processor, amp, and sleek sub-woofer that's almost unnoticeable in the back, and I was sold on the solution as a complete kit to address the low quality stock sound of the 4Runner. I'm very happy with the investment.

Before OEM audio, the three audio level adjustments in the stock deck failed to make anything sound good. After the upgrade, the mid, high, and low adjustments on the stock deck are more than sufficient to level it out and make anything I'm listening to sound great.
