Dom’s build thread

Ok I guess I’ll start one too.

This is my white 2019 trd off road premium w/ kdss.

I have built many diesel / hd trucks for Baja style chase / race so I’m familiar with how to properly set up suspension. Hint hint I’m actually in charge of building some suspension kits for a few different platforms for a new company that will hit the market in 2020. We will be using King shocks with our own valving as I have ridding in a few off the shelf King shock equipped ( extended travel/ Oem replacement ) trucks and there’s definitely room for improvement. Not that king doesn’t know what they are doing , but , I know for a fact they don’t do a lot of r&d for the off the shelf valving( I have been working with them for over 10 years , but I’ll leave it at that lol).

With all that said most of the funding is going to the ford ranger platform currently but we are going back into the 4Runner next. First part will be a bumper. While all this is being done I am trying to get my 4Runner setup with whatever limited funding I have.

The ranger. We are currently using svc upper a arms for this build while we figure out our design. But currently funding is being allocated to the front bumper , another part I can’t talk about yet and the rear leaf spring development.

I’ll b running some trd forged wheels. The rings are being powder coated matte black.

Made some prototype rear links using some spc flex joints. I’m trying to find the balance of a hd joint and low / no maintenance/ quite. We’ll see how this works out. I’ll have a heim/ uniball version. I had these powder coated in clear.

I’ll be running the only tire brand ( Toyo) I trust but this time I’m going for the rt’s vs mt’s. 285/75/17. I’ll be test fitting and cycling the suspension over the next couple of weeks.

I had these laying around ( camburg) , so I’ll use these for now to get proper alignment and see how I can improve on it when I design them for the 4Runner.

Kings came in last week. Going to start with custom valved 2.5’s front coil over , finned resis , compression adjusters , stainless shaft , extended travel. I need to take the coils off and install everything to cycle it.

Rear shocks are 2.5 kings extended travel, stainless shafts , finned resis and triple bypass. 2 compression 1 rebound.

Once I get the links on and cycle the rear , I’ll be able to figure out the track bar setup and yes I have kdss so I’ll try and figure out the whole trac bar sway contact for extended travel shocks. I’m not looking to have a weird/ zig zag track bar that can only work with stock links.

For the rear coils , I’m finding the toytech coils are the softest but I notice it increases load capacity by 20%. Which actually mean stiffer then stock. In my world we want to lose load capacity by about 20% for maximum performance but I understand this whole overland world is all about loading up the vehicle with more weight so I get. I’ll need to find that balance. I live near eibach so most likely I will work with them.

To be continued ...

Nice! Thank you for powder coating those in clear, that's an awesome idea to show off those beautiful welds.

I just swapped out the black lift gate garnish for a colored March version like how the se5 guys have it. But also I’m going to color match the Toyota and 4Runner emblems.

I also got to wire in the a abs/ trac off switch so I can boogie and lock up brakes when in the dirt.

Haha yeah we going for maximum travel. I’m new to the 4Runner world and holy crap it’s about the stance and big negative offsets lol. Or spacer . So weird to me.

Anyway, when I figure this kit out I’ll do a 2” over setup that will have a coil over and a bypass shock. With the bypasses I think I’ll b good with some duro bumps , but with that said yeah I’ll end up with hydros lol. It’s really never going to end.

The craziest part for me is , the platform has been around for a while and I’m tripn out that no one has done a rear long arm kit. I figured one out already. I’ll eventually get to that. I’m thinkn by summer 2020.

there's a rear kit out there that says its "long travel" but i think its a 3" lift with super tall bump stops. So you get a bunch of droop but thats it

I think the sonoran steel bar you mentioned earlier actually does get the most travel with extended travel shocks with the KDSS setup

just cantilever it and call it a day, you know you want to.

I have not found one company that has a long travel kit for the rear end of the 4Runner. Every1 is coming off the stock pivots. Which I’m doing first but for sure I found a way to add 20% length to both lower and upper links which would be considered long travel. Every kit out there is mid travel at best.

Yea that trac bar does allow the most travel for the extended travel shocks but it’s soooo ugly. And it will only work if you have stock length links. Or say if one wanted to use an aftermarket rear end and what not. It wouldn’t work.

I actually do want to cantilever it. We already did it to our diesel chase trucks. These thing pull 20” of rear travel and 16” up front at about a 2-3” ride height over stock on one and 4” over stock ride height .....And it can haul a lot.

Weird. I’m trying to post another truck but it’s showing my buddies truck too. But yeah that’s how we do it on our diesels.

I have. I have a better idea. 3 link is for ppl who have no time to figure out a 4 link long arm. I’m not into 3 links But definitely is cool looking.

I got to adjust the hose a little more. Freaking king had the hoses facing the wrong way and label completely wrong has far as left or right shocks . Not surprised. I’m going to pull the coils tomorrow and cycle the suspension to make sure the bypasses clear.

Also I’m needing some duro bumps soon.

Whats the pro's/cons spark notes to 4 vs 3 link? googling shows packaging a 4 link is more difficult. Also that was quite the rabbit hole of internet engineers arguing about links.

3 link is not as stable as 4 link. Which is why he’s talking about adding an antirock sway bar. 3 link is best suited for slow off road rock crawling style. Definitely will articulate super nice. But also 4 link can as well.

Dom’s build thread

Full droop and full bump. 34” tires ( 285/75 17) on trd forged wheels with +6 offset 7.5 wide. This wheel is sooooo perfect for this truck. I still have about 3/8” from body mount. No need to chop. I just got trim some stuff up front.

Actually I lied. There’s some slight scuff at full bump on the upper inner fender liner. Heat gun will fix that. Or let it self clearance lol.
