I've been asking myself this same question.
At the end of the day, from what I've used, the propane Coleman lantern performs the best.

Pros:
Brightest "area" light I've used
Warm/Soft Light
Nostalgic

Cons:
Large (Light & Bottles)
Loud
Hot to handle

On our last 6000mi trip, I had six 1-lb propane bottles with me for our stove, lantern, and hot water shower. I ended the trip with two partially used tanks left.

Lumin-Aid Lanterns work well, solar charge, pack up small and are great to carry along for backpacking as well.
