Fire 4Runner

My City has just got these delivered. I've seen a few running around town. No mods that I can tell except they have removed the trim on the Rear Pillar. Inside they have the shift stick for 4wd (not knob)... not sure what it is.

Hmmm...the wheels, stick shift, and hood tell me it's a TRD Off Road. I wonder why they did not get SR5s and save the taxpayer a buck (unless they got special pricing). Or maybe they're 2019's that someone wanted to get rid of.

Anyway, did the vehicle have a sunroof? It'd be interesting to pull a VIN to see if it has KDSS.

The wheels, hood, silver valances, and 4WD shifter are dead giveaways of ORP. To totally confirm, check for the crawl controls on the ceiling. Not a bad way to spend some taxpayer money.

Based on the wheels it's old enough to be a Trail, not a TRD Off Road. Which would also explain the lack of badging.

I thought it’s a pretty responsible purchase… The operators/drivers may not be fully proficient in off-road driving, some of the electronics assists like CC may be useful for less experienced drivers. KDSS would help if its heavily loaded with gear too. You never know what type of obstacles an emergency could bring and one less disabled vehicle could be a life saved.

Plus it’s a Toyota, I can think of worse ways they could spend tax dollar money. Heck, they could have bought LandCruisers instead and I would still think it’s reasonable if they use them well.

At least that would be my justification if I was in their shoes lol.

It is California. They don't care how they spend taxpayer money - as long as it isn't on the taxpayer.

The dealer they bought it from undoubtedly swapped wheels.

I suppose one benefit is that the vehicles will last for a long time. I recall seeing a post about a 1983 Toyota Pickup that was sold last year or so by a Fire Department. It was in great shape...

I also see that the vehicle is not a 2020 based on the front grille...

Agreed - Trail wheels don't have the black 'paint' that the OR wheels have.

Good point about the wheels.

Maybe the OP can grab a VIN the next time they see the vehicle!

So I Googled "CA exempt license plate lookup", found a free website which produced a VIN (JTEBU5JRXE5190418) which, after another search, told me it's a 2014 4Runner. Looks to be in pretty good shape!

So I guess the mystery is solved...maybe...

@DingusGoziña you said "Had these delivered" which indicates multiple vehicles?

If it's one it could well be a repo or confiscated vehicle.

I have been living here for 4 years and only just started seeing them. It could be the same vehicle that I have seen multiple times but I would make a guess they have more than 1 based on how often I've seen it.

It's a regular Off Road, the Off Road Premium would have mirror turn signals

I'm surprised it isn't more popular/common. The 4runner is a rugged, capable, and dependable body on frame vehicle so it fits right in. Especially given Cali's overall mountainous terrain and the amount of wildfires Cali has. Sure as heck better than the expeditions, tahoe's, and explorers most departments use.
