Aftermarket JL Audio system install on a 2020
One of the big reasons I waited for the 2020 model year was for the larger display and Apple Carplay. I’ve always had a system in my vehicles and it was a priority to upgrade the underwhelming stock audio.
At first I considered the OEM audio plus option but read about issues others were having with 2020 compatibility. No knock on them, but it also seems that some those that have that system we’re looking to add a second subwoofer which made me think it didn’t produce a fair amount of bass. I wanted a minimal sized sub enclosure and couldn’t really find anything to my liking online. Taco tunes was just too bulky.
So, I jumped right in with the following components to run with my stock head unit.
JL Audio FiX OEM integration processor
JL Audio 10TW3 shallow mount subwoofer in sealed enclosure and outer baffle
JL Audio C5 650 components in front. Tweeters in dash locations
JL Audio C3 650 components in rear setup as coaxial
JL Audio RD900/5 channel amp
Hushmat in all doors
Rear hatch speakers left stock. Can’t hear ‘em anyway. Setup for front staging.
The subwoofer enclosure is small and out of the cargo area just the way wanted it. When I first saw it, I thought there’s no way that sub is going to make me happy.
I WAS WRONG!!
This system is so clean and sounds absolutely amazing! I can’t recommend enough this shallow mount sub. It hits so hard it reminds of my Rockford Fosgate days. Good thing I have a bass knob because I find myself constantly turning it down.

It's a 10" woofer. Not sure what the stock JBL is?

The stock JBL is 8” or so I thought.
I really like this enclosure you built. Wouldn’t have thought a 10” sub would fit there!

Did you cut into the interior panel at all or is the enclosure THAT shallow?

No, I didn’t cut into the interior panel, this subwoofer is really that shallow. There was another sub model that actually used even LESS airspace than this one.

How did you integrate a sub with the head unit? I want to add an amp and sub to my stock system but there isn't much by way of literature on the internet for the 2020. Do you have any pictures of the unit out or could you possibly help me understand how you integrated it? Do you know if the taco tunes adaptor would work? Great job!

How do you like the C5? We installed the RD900 in my wife's subie. For the runner, i might get an amp with built in DSP or some kind of sound processor already.

The Sub looks great!
Do you have any pics of the C3-650's in the rear doors?

Well, at least I know that a sub can be added. I've been pretty disappointed with the JBL system in my 2020 TRDP. The system itself is fine, but it sucks not being able to isolate the bass to the subwoofer. There's simply not enough bass for some stuff, even if you crank the bass up across the whole system (which risks blowing out the rest of the speakers). Stupid design.
I need to take my truck to the installer who did my last system and see what they can come up with for me.
I want a similar setup to yours, except I want a 12W6 instead of a 10w3. That's a much deeper sub, but it's what I had in my last car and it's exactly what I want. I just have to get them to come up with a box design that has enough internal volume without taking up too much of the cargo area, especially since I have the sliding tray. Gotta make sure it doesn't effect the seat's ability to recline either.
EDIT: had a chat with my install shop. What I want basically can't be done with a W6; it's too much depth, and with the sliding cargo tray, there are issues of balance, etc. without drilling into the car. Talked about some slimmer models and making something work, but ultimately decided that for what I wanted to get out of the sound, a classic style box was best. They're going to angle the rear of the box so that it won't interfere with the rear seats reclining and it'll be easily removable.

Thanks for posting this! I was actually looking at this shallow-mount JL sub last week. I didn't know they existed. I'm glad you like It. Its looking like I'm going to look into this more.

Love the sound of the C5's. Honestly, the whole system sounds fantastic. I currently have the sub box out of my Runner and I'll post box dimensions for those that are interested.
