Android Auto

I've had my 2020 for just a few days so I'm still trying to figure some things out. What's the deal with Android Auto? I read the manual but didn't get much good info. Does it really only work if you plug your phone in? I heard people were excited about it, so I assume I'm doing it wrong. I thought maybe it had to be cables to make some glorious audio or something so I tried Spotify on it and it sounded like complete garbage. I used to use the music apps through entune on my 2016 and they were great but they kept removing them one at a time.

This seems like 2010 technology, not 2020. Any advice?

Spotify, Google music apple music suck. Low quality sound. Download some flac songs or even CD into your phone. Better yet try Tidal music, good quality streaming but expensive. Even better is Amazon HD music, they offer a free trial and offer better than CD sound.
Forgot, what runner sound you got, the premium audio sucks but can be fixed with speakers. The JBL is ok but still sucks. Runners are not known for sound quality.

Current head unit in vehicle has to use a wire. Aftermarket ones usually have wireless Android auto or apple car play available.

I would check the music app itself and see if there is a quality option. A lot of times apps will default to low quality or medium quality when using mobile. That may help some.

Tidal has the highest quality that I can think of from a streaming service. They just don't offer a free version and it's like $20 a month I believe (could be wrong).

Tidal is good but Amazon changed the game. Much cheaper and better quality

I know of no OE that has wireless AA and very few aftermarket units that have a reliable wireless AA - the tech ain't quite there yet.

This. I'm not an audiophile but I find android auto Spotify sounds good. If you're worried about data you can download songs onto phone with Spotify if you have the subscription.

Have trouble understanding your original question - have you gotten android auto to work? If not, download most recent version on your phone and plug phone into car. There is an option in the menu to go into android auto. You will find Google maps is superior to the built in navigation. It's worthwile. There is also a setting somewhere in the infotainment menus to make android auto automatically pop up if you plug in the phone when you start the car - I forget it at the moment.

Some luxury cars have wireless android and apple but if audio quality is your goal that is unlikely to be a desirable option in any case.

Nope. Apple CarPlay can be wireless, but there is no wireless AA from any car manufacturer.

BMW will be adding AA next year, but I don't know if it is wireless or wired.

I never considered android auto for the audio quality but it’s an amazing application along with CarPlay. To me having Waze in my car is worth a significant amount. Not to mention hands-free notifications I send text, facebook messenger and google hangouts messages all the time without touching my phone. If you don’t find any value in those things then it’s not like you have to use it.

Have you upgraded your speakers?

Anyone have issues sending and receiving texts in AA? Never had issues in my 2017 Accord Hybrid as AA worked flawlessly but the one in the 4runner doesn't like voice commands at all. Sometimes it'll act like it didn't recognize a command only to follow through on it. Something doesn't seem right.

Are you using steering wheel voice button? It doesn't do much with Android auto. I use Hey Google (voice only) and have no issue with creating and sending a text.
