OEM Audio Plus Reference 500 is the cat's pajamas.

This is going to sound like a commercial, and i guess it is. I had this put in and it is amazing. Like being inside a different vehicle and makes you realize how total crappy the stock system is/was.

To me this is the best, most justifiable $$ mod you can do I think, as it is something you use at ALL times (at least i do). There is richer Clear sound, crispy tight highs and clear un-muffled bass. The sound "feel" now carries to the front of the truck..to the windshield unlike before. SO its more "surround sound" somehow is best i can explain.

I took before and after recordings to compare, but those sort of suck because i used my phone.

The only thing that sort of steals from it, is when i have my rig stuffed for camping (which is very often), the entire sub and rears are blocked by my cooler and stuff. But nothing i can do about that!

If anyone was on the fence on this one, GET IT!!

$1.7k is a lot of bread for me to spend on tunes. I can see doing it if I were a total audiophile though.

Yeah each of has our thing we are willing to pony up for. Example, I think rooftop tents are totally overrated, the cons far outweigh the pros, so I wouldn't want one for FREE. And some of those are $5K!

But I am an audiophile, so it was a must have. My "on the fence' item is a supercharger lol.

The 4Runner's stereo is not that bad. I just spent 2 weeks in a brand new rental Equinox. Even with the bass all the way maxed.. it still sound like shit. Seriously a stereo made for talk radio. Awful!! I was so happy to be back in my 4Runner!!

I was going to do that to my 17 Pro but traded for my 2020 Pro. Just comparing my 17 Pro Entune to my 2020 Pro JBL system very pleased with myJBl. I’m the same way with my music and having a awesome system in my vehicle. I just chose not to change out my system when I had my 17.

Back in the 90s, I was a competitive car stereo guy competing in the sound quality classes. I’ve always been a fan of high end equipment and sound. I’ve been pondering my system setup in my ‘19, and I’ve been hearing good things about this one made specifically for our vehicles. This one and the purpose-built Focal set. The OEM Audio one appeals because it’s tuned for us already. Not that one couldn’t get a processor from JL to do that, too, but this certainly takes a lot of setup time out of the equation.

Part of the fun for me is doing the design, build, and setup. But sometimes an EASY button is a good thing.

Do you know if it's possible (or cost effective) to buy the parts and upgrade to the JBL audio in a non-Pro/Limited TRD ORP? I know you can buy the woofer enclosure and use it to install an Amp and 8" Sub.

I hate giving up cargo space for a sub, but you can't get the best sound without it, can you? Maybe putting 6" component woofers in each door?

I'm coming from an Audi S4 with a bad ass sound system.

I think what you are going to pay for the jbl system to upgrade in your 4runner if it’s even possible I think I would go this route what he did with the oem plus audio system. That comes with everything and easy hook up. Has the speakers, subwoofer and processor. You can watch you tube video they have to show how it’s hooked up.

I bet it would not be cost effective and you’d end up with something just pretty good versus something great for similar money.

I also have an audi with a bang and olfusen system and it does sound quite good (perhaps too weak on the sub but that may be due to where it is on my particular model). I’ve done a bunch of custom audio builds over the years but for this 4runner I decided to give the oemaudio+ system a shot. Partially because bolt-on appeals to me these days and partly because someone has presumably gone through the tuning/dsp which is a major and under-appreciated step towards a good sounding system.

I’ll post an update/opinion once I have it in!

I do like the OEM sub placement. It's not too big. The Tacotunes sub box is ginormous. The OEM Audio looks to be easily removable if needed? Can I actually just take it out and put it back in as needed when carrying stuff in the back?

Yeah, I like the OEM simplicity, but I just was thinking if I just wanted to add a sub and amp, I could use the actual OEM mounting box like this guy did. That said, having it virtually plug and play is ideal.
