Yeah - guess there is no doubt the seat belts work well and the drivers seat is adequately bolted down. Passenger wouldn't have done too well that's for sure.

This! ^^^^^ Offset collision. Probably tried to swerve at the left at the last second but not soon enough. I don't know if this is representative of the crash worthiness given its clearly a high(er) speed impact to a SEMI and were it head on would have most certainly been fatal to all occupants up front. Glad the driver survived but it was merely luck at that point.
Edit: Just realized that OP linked the article itself. Yeah he's lucky as hell to be alive.
