Changing remote key battery - Problem

I tried searching endless threads on programming the remote key for my 2015 4Runner....can't figure out my issue. This is the all-in-one OEM Toyota Key+remote. Here is some background:

I had a well used 5 year old key that stopped opening/closing the doors. I thought it was a battery issue. I grabbed my unused 5 year old spare key and same issue. I changed the battery on each thinking both were dead. After changing the batteries, my backup key seemed to have power but the older key is still not functioning.....so I decide to just use the backup key.

I used it for a couple of weeks without issue and then yesterday with a handful of stuff, I accidentally set off my alarm by pressing the key alarm button...got it shut off...drive the car later, lock it with the remote, come back to the car and it won't unlock...try to unlock and the alarm goes off. The key remote at this point is not working....no lock, no unlock...it is like it lost its programming. Keep in mind this is a relatively unused OEM key with a new battery.

I disassemble the key, remove the remote housing and check the battery, button pads, rubber internal piece and check the functionality using just the remote housing without putting it in the key and snapping shut. It works perfectly after putting the battery back in...kind of like resetting the unit. So with the remote housing still out of the key shell, I push unlock, it unlocks, push lock, it locks.

Then I put the remote housing unit in the key shell, snap it shut and the alarm starts to goes off without touching a single button. I have to put the key in the ignition to shut down the alarm and note the red light is flashing on the key....and of course, now the door lock/unlock won't work. I remove the remote housing from the key shell, try using the unlock button and it works perfectly.....snap it back in and same thing, alarm goes off and key won't work.

What am I doing wrong? Is there some kind of programming/chip type recognition when I snap it in the key housing? Do I need to reprogram it?....if so, how...specifically...don't have a techstream programming option.

The red light on the key fob only lights up when one of the buttons is depressed. Open your key back up and make sure something isnít pushing a button.

Did that...it sets off the alarm every time and right after I put in the key to the ignition to kill the alarm, remove the key and then I get three consecutive red flashes. Then nothing.
