Another screwed up service thread 2018 ORD

I am completely livid about what I found on my 4runner tonight. Is it too much to ask to have a service go without issues? Are there any good techs at Toyota dealers in Southwest Florida?

My first service, 5k, at Sun Toyota left me with a noise in the front end after a alignment due to some wandering. Upon the return to the service department they stated the control arm bolts were loose.

This past service was my 10k. I changed my oil last weekend as I dont want someone else touching it. My brother had his '18 SR5 done at Auto Nation and they cracked the filter housing, overfilled the oil and stripped the skid plate bolts.

I checked my oil Sunday and found it was fresh clean oil. Granted the Amsoil was only in there a week, but this looks nothing like Amsoil. Amsoil has almost a honey look to it, this is almost clear with a very light yellow tint. Had an opportunity to crawl under and look it over tonight and I am absolutely am so pissed off.. My front two skid plate bolts are cross threaded and not even in completely. They are hanging out about a 1/4". There is oil leaking from the bottom of the filter housing. Mind you, I just replaced the plastic unit with a new Toyota metal housing. And they probably screwed that up.

Why is it so hard to find service departments that actually have techs that can perform a simple oil freaking oil change?

So now I have a $40k+ vehicle that they are going to want to rid to fix it with drilling and tapping and who knows what they did to the housing?

On top of that I asked them to check the brakes as they felt spongy. I posted it in another thread. The seem to work fine, but I can push the pedal to the floor and feel it stop. It takes more pressure than a normal stop, but I've never driven a new vehicle that had that much travel that didnt have an issue. They did nothing about this and stated they are working fine.

Really, I am beside myself tonight as I am so pissed off that I now have a vehicle with less than 10k miles and the dealership screwed it up. Not to mention now I am going to have to take off work to get this dealt with. I will be calling service first thing in the morning. I also emailed the General Manager and will be contacting Toyota directly as well.

Has anyone gone through the same issue? Are the brackets that the skid plate bolt to replaceable? They look to be as I dont want a drilled and tapped rig job on such a new vehicle.

That stinks! I used to love dealer changes. Back in the day the local Toyota dealer would change any make/model oil for 20. going rate was 30 and they did a standup job. Now you couldn't pay me for a free oil change! Used to be like...well, by the time I buy oil, prep the rig, change oil, cleanup and shower its so worth to have it done. Not no more. It's like they go outta the way to hire idiots.

I am going to check and see if i have to come in for the rest of my services. I dont mind them looking it over, but they will never touch it again for oil. Not sure if I even want them to touch it for other things, but thats what the warranty is for.

Love wasting my time and money and getting screwed over.

Based on your experience, what can I expect talking to them tomorrow ? I am sure it is going to be a pain in my ass.

Nothing. Unfortunately I was moved out of the area once I found out. I did call back and complain to the service manager but they didn’t care at that point. I am probably going to see if I can up it up the chain in Toyota but I don’t have high hopes. You might have better luck since your still near the dealer.

This was my oil filter housing after my local Toyota dealer, took it upon themselves to change the oil change and rotate the tires without my consent. My 4Runner was in their service department so they could change the power window user settings. I’m the only person that touches my 4Runner, I was pissed when I saw oil all over it. I always spray the housing with degreaser and then hose it off after each service. They also stripped the threads on the radiator support brackets. They eventually reimbursed me for the radiator support brackets they ****ed up. They wanted to rethread then, I said “Hell no, I want new ones.” Had to go through the Bureau of Automotive Repair the get them to bend over and pay me.

There must be a thousand posts in this forum with experiences like yours. I have had similar problems with dealer service.

I recently talked with a Toyota service manager at a holiday party. He said their techs are all trained and certified, in classes and on the job. They know the proper procedures. But they are on commission. So each procedure has a certain time assigned to it. An oil service/tire rotation might be allocated 0.75 hrs. If the tech finishes it sooner he still gets credit for 0.75 hours of work. The incentive is to work as fast as possible so the tech performs as many jobs as possible during his shift. That means more money for him and more for the shop. And as we see, faster work equals more mistakes. By necessity this is the business model for dealer service.

The only solution is to do it yourself and keep good records/receipts for any warranty proof. There are plenty of threads here on doing routine maintenance. It’s not very difficult if you are at all handy. Or you could find a good independent mechanic.

Just be glad runners don't have auto start/ stop.
With that the engines have baffles in place to retain oil up in the engine so soon as it starts the engine is charged with oil and ready to go. Changing oil one needs the engine off 1/2 hr minimum to allow all the oil to work its way out. Same applies to refill as it takes time for it to get all in the pan.
1st and last time Ford changed my oil they not only left half the old oil in(didn't wait) they topped it off with the full amount. I checked the oil before I left and was dirty and way high on the dipstick. They drained 11 quarts out and took their time. Idiots
Oh forgot, Ford uses plastic drain plugs that go in hand right. They work but techs overtighten them and cracked it

Try unscrewing the techs head from his body. That should help him understand correct thread pitch..

My best.. Went in to have my new tires/rims fitted with tpms. I had the sticky type balance weights from the tire rack. Rims are painted black. So the cunt tech..yes I am speaking to you if your reading this ****face..from Redhill Toyota..took it upon himself to take an angle grinder to the wheel weights..dug a hole in the reverse side of the rim and hacked it up nicely..totally destroyed the paint. Didnt notice till a couple of weeks later as its inside the wheel rim.

Redhill Toyota... Hamilton Ontario. Yes thats you.... your guy used an angle grinder to remove weights you could pop off easily with a putty knife.

I wonder if this colossal incompetent cunt from REDHILL TOYOTA did it deliberately...I mean how else could you be so blatantly incompetent on damaging a customers vehicle

NExt time I take the techs photo and post it on the web so all can see what quality isnt..

Disgusting people. Due to the absolute shitt service from Toyota I shouldve bought a lexus..at least they are civilized.

Your not wrong, its shame and not the Toyota way. I bet these things don't at Japanese dealerships.

The front (curved) radiator support that the skid plate fastens to is replaceable. PO/Dealer broke off bolt and I almost ordered a new support bracket as a fix. I was finally able to get the old bolt out after removing the rad bracket from the truck.

I don't follow the OP's story. You changed the oil yourself at 10k...why did the dealer do it this time?
Also, it doesn't seem to matter what level tech you get, they're all capable of F'ing up your truck. I had my headlights replaced under a TSB and when they put the bumper back on it was flopping around as they broke the bumper mounts on both sides and tried to deny it.

Some service departments are better then others have been taking my 2016 to mountain states and they have done a fine job every time. They also did the airbag swap and it was done right no scratches or gaps etc. In general dealers don't make money on oil changes, so every time you go in they try and recommend other services to be profitable.

The dealer did it because the service advisor never put it on the paperwork to NOT change the oil. SO even though I said it at least 3-4 times, he ignored me. Then lied to me at the end of the service saying they didnt do it. When I returned he said he forgot to tell the tech. And then the Service manager said they would send me a gift card and again, lied and never did. After owning many Toyotas, I think this may be my last.. Well at least the last new one as you cant trust their service or people at the dealers.

I never got new ones.. Really just fed up with Toyota service departments at this point. Toyota corp doesnt seem to care that the service departments are screwing up peoples vehicles. Their responses have all been "Did they rectify the problem?" and then onto the next topic. Sad thing is between my Brother and I, we have had issues at every dealer in our area. None of them are trustworthy in the Clearwater/Holiday area. May have to start driving to Tampa.
