Windshield advice
My family and I are pcsing from San Diego to South Carolina, and I currently have a 5 inch crack I’m the windshield. Should I replace it before my road trip or... push it because I know I’ll crack it again on the road trip?

I wouldn’t push it, theoretically you could catch a crack on the way back home after replacement! I drove within a few weeks Santa Cruz-NYC-Orlando-Santa Cruz-Orlando without noticeable damage to my windshield, my wife drove not even an hour to Disney and got a bad one... you never know!
The Risk that the existing crack get worse is way higher

So replace windshield drive 5000 miles on highways, risk of damage = high
Keep current windshield, replace when after trip = well seems like the smart move to me ?
Guess I am not sure what you are asking. So what if the crack grows? Your windshield isn’t going to just fail. Is it right in your line of vision so that it is bothersome to see past or something?

If you have full coverage car insurance in South Carolina there is no deductible on windshield replacement.
So if you have to pay in CA I'd try to wait until SC. If you are military and don't register your 4R in SC that might not apply though.

Wait until you get back home unless it's keeping you from seeing or it's leaking.
I think I'm on my 6th or 7th glass.

Why the windshield fear of highway driving?
I’ve got over 36K mostly high speed highway miles in CA, NV, AZ,UT in 2 years.
No cracks, although several tiny rock chips in the windshield.
I’d replace it and enjoy it.

Mine just cracked. I'm leaving it. Not in my line of sight.

I had to have my first chip repair at 8k miles. There are lots of things I love about living in Colorado, but there are also a lot I hate...

Not really- probably pretty high priced there, but you probably already know that.
My dad was a career Marine 21 years- so I grew up in all that- he retired when I was 15.
Lived at Camp Lejeune twice- in fact I was born there. Pensacola twice, Quantico and southern Cal when he was at El Toro before heading to Nam flying CH53's out of Marble Mtn.
We lost him last year at 88.

It depends in part of where the damage is and what happens if it grows. If it outside your line of sight, then I'd drive by a glass place and see what you can do to stop it from spreading.
I suspect that you'll need to pay your deductible in either case even if you register your car there - in which case you probably need a safety inspection first and the glass will most likely fail.
But -- if you've done your deductibles correctly, then your pain will be less. Glass (unless you are in a no glass deductible state) falls under the comprehensive portion of your insurance. Lowering your comp deductible is cheap (for me, with USAA in VA, the difference between a $1k deductible and a $100 deductible is about $25 a year). Lowering the collision portion is expensive.
Get ready to see your rates skyrocket in SC - insurance rates are obscene there and it doesn't make any difference where your car is registered - only where it is "normally garaged".
