Not really into wrestling with a swing arm to get into my truck. Not really interested in spending 3+ g's for a swing out. Not really interested in adding all the weight. Not really interested in moving my reverse camera. Not really interested in worrying about theft. Not really interested in making my truck longer.

Will compromise on a bumper if convinced otherwise.

My thoughts:

Floor plate in the cargo area. Vertical tire mount... mounted to the floor plate and body floor like the do in the 80 series.

Forums are spotty and people mumble about doing it but my search yields nothing.

Anyone have some input?

I bought my passenger side molle panel from some guy in Maine who does this. As long as its secure and you are ok with losing some cargo space i don’t see any issues with it.

This style is an option too but it seems like an incredible waste of space for anything other than a prerunner. Still mulling over what it would be like to live with that.

Full sized 33/34 would rip a molle panel off pretty easy in an accident. Then you have both flying around the cabin.

Wish they where strong enough for that.

I had my (oversized) spare stored in the cargo area in my Touareg, and while it did occupy a ton of space, it worked.

The Touareg wasn't able to have it vertically like the 4Runner can, so it had to lay across the cargo area, thus I built a box around it. The box was held down from all four sides, and subsequently held the tire in place.

With all that being said, I'm glad I never had to switch to the spare as I'm sure it would have turned the cargo area into a dirt/mud disaster (come on, you never end up needing a spare in clean dry conditions)

Thought about going this route as well. Still on the table for sure.

Dirty interior in the off chance I have to use my spare isn't the end of the world for me. Although with the box setup it would be much worse the vertical.

Not necessarily convenient in any way for changing the tire, but you could also do a roof rack mounted tire.

Growing up we had Suburbans/Excursions and those had the cargo rear tire. They weren't too bad until we had an Excursion on 35's - that thing chewed up quite a bit more space than the OEM size.

If you don't mind losing the cargo area, have a small enough tire, and don't mind the potential of hearing a tire rub on the hatch, the vertical would be fine. IIRC, the dimensions from back of seat (upright position) to the hatch is 34.5" - throw in the tubing for holding a tire, room to keep the tire from rubbing on the back of the seat and you might have a tight fit.

Pass on the roof mount. Bad idea in more ways then one.

Second row is likely going to be deleted outright. Space to mount in not my concern. I have accepted potential noise.

Just trying to get an idea if anyone has come up with something.

He didnt mount it on his molle panel, rather he didnt need the passenger side because his wheel was taking up the area in the passenger side so he didnt need it.

Have you considered a Wilco hitchgate or similar? Roof storage was not something I was willing to do either and storing under the truck when wheeling was a concern.

Benefits:
-Protection from rear end accidents
-Storage of jack, fuel, trash bag
-Cost (relative to full bumper)
-Removable during non-offloading season/trips
-Looks nice IMO

Cons:
-Weight (~60 lbs)
-Hatch access requires swingout
-License Plate re-locate/ Camera re-locate if desired.
-Tightening the hitch-lock once a month or it will rattle.
-Some loss of departure angle and overall length increase.
-Rear view mirror slightly obstructed.

If you're planning on getting rid of the second row entirely, maybe something like a divided slide with the spare mounted on the passenger side of the slide? (You know, to help even out the Runner's lean.)

Unless you are planning to remove your stock rear bumper, exhaust, and hitch, just how much departure angle are you REALLY saving with removing the spare?

I have no plastics in the rear so I'm looking to get a steel bumper just without swings.

I see these as a very expensive workaround for the problem personally.

Hmm spare is pretty heavy. I don't think I would want it on slides (at least the ones I could get on my budget). I would consider mounting it somewhere in the second row area. I would for sure need to make a flush metal door card so I don't destroy the stock one going in and out (and give me more room).



Stock rear bumper ripped off. Stock exhaust got crushed and cut back to the axle. Hitch might come off too because I don't tow. Not to mention at close to 34" the spare rubs the suspension arms.

What I will be saving is my spare itself. Sidewall is getting chewed up on rocks.

If I camped in parking lots with picnic tables, a bbq pits, day passes, and toilets then sure. But that is not my reality nor do I want it to be.

Just asking because cargo mounted can be a 100 pound missile to the back of the head in an accident and most mounting kits aren't very secure.

Well aware. Same goes for everything you put in the vehicle mounted or otherwise (coughs in people mounting fire extinguishers to molle panels). It's not if it can come loose but how much force is required.

Ideally I would like some sort of metal barrier like a work van. RN I have a rango net 1st row barrier which would prob not stop a spare tire in an accident.

idk that I'm doing this or not. Just not really content with what is available.
