2020 Pro - Road noise, sound system, and carplay/conference call performance

Hello all,

Just got my white 2020 pro after biting the bullet and trading in a 2019 black pro.

Couple of things that I find that I don't like about my 2020:

1. Road noise - I hear a lot more, muffler etc. I love music and I appreciate a good sound system. I'm thinking about deadening the sound with sound treatment (dynomat) and also upgrading the speakers and adding an aftermarket amp to work with the headunit. Any recommendations or gotcha that I should be aware of?

2. conference calls using carplay, wired. lots of cutting in and out, unusable. Bluetooth is better but people on the other end say I sound like I'm in a "tunnel". Any thoughts on fix or solution?

Overall I'm super happy but option 1 might require me dropping more coin for me to be content with the audio system.

I'm also having a lot of issues with the calls through Carplay cutting in and out. Very frustrating. I read that Toyota has a Headunit update that the dealer can do for you that is on some of the newer builds. Apparently can't update from head unit by yourself. In the same boat with the sound system as well. It's not that bad, but would like it to be better.

Long thread about car play issues. Apple/ Toyota are working on it.
Trd exhaust is quiet compared to aftermarket catback systems. Just trade yours with stock, many would trade in a heartbeat to get your exhaust.

I like a quiet cabin, the exhaust droning would irritate me to no end… I don’t think sound deadening is going to help as much as you would like, but you certainly do have the upper hand in a trade. I would offer a trade + buyer pays shop labor for swap or cash to you if it’s a DIY removal.

I have trouble hearing who I'm speaking with when calling through carplay...and that's with the iPhone volume cranked and stereo cranked.

Whatever, I'll just use Bluetooth...and listen to my rad exhaust.

I’ve got a 2020 as well and the background noise in the background is to the point where people say they can barely hear past the cabin wind noise. Has anybody found a way to reduce the noise or make the speaker clearer?

I agree the TRD exhaust is sometimes annoying.

I have no issues with phone calls or Bluetooth in my 2020 Pro. Exhaust sounds fine. Does not bother me. Maybe because I’m use to driving my corvette with the loud exhaust.

TRD Exhaust

I swap my wife's TRD exhaust with a stock one. She did not like the sound at all.

The exhaust doesn’t bother me and I’ve had good luck with my Bluetooth and Apple car play stuff so far.

The JBL is ok, but I honestly think the system in my 2004 3-series sounds better. I had to throw the JBL in our trucks two clicks to the rear on the fader and the bass in the car isn’t great. You also can’t isolate the sub to adjust its settings, so if you bump the bass up it sends it through everything including the speakers which is terrible for them.

It’s an ok system that could be really nice with a few tweaks

Sound treatment and speaker upgrades are great ideas. Do some research and maybe consult with car audio experts at conferences & events for the best options.

If Bluetooth isn't working well, check for software updates and consider using an external microphone for better call quality.

Overall, it's awesome that you're happy with your new ride, even if upgrading the audio system requires some extra spending.
