This thread is interesting and kind of hilarious. I would like to hear about some of the gun battles people have gotten into while driving around in their 4Runners.

Understandable... There's a nerdy hobby element to this for sure...
Unless you've been the victim of, or witness to violent crime, it is very unlikely your world view & personal paradigm will accommodate a Preparedness mindset.
My father & two sisters were gunshot victims. Luckily they all survived. I knew a very kind, upstanding, non-confrontational Man who was bludgeoned to death on his property in a safe neighborhood. I once pulled up at a gas station around dusk as an armed robbery was in progress. Very bloody. Again, in a "safe" town. Im guessing you wouldn't find that "hilarious".
In this day & age its more important than ever to be our own first responders. Ordinary people find themselves in extraordinary circumstances much more often than you'd expect. Many of us hold insurance on our vehicles, homes, pets & personal belongings to hedge against loss of property. Many of us hold firearms as insurance to hedge against loss of Life.

That said, Im considering supplemental Truck-mounted carbine-length blasters or take-down rifles that are 50 state legal, and enable reasonable defensive capability out to extended urban distances or wilderness/camping scenarios should I be in an area where a handgun is prohibited or insufficient.
I have a 16" AR that serves 51% "Recce Rifle" & 49% plinking duty... This is not suitable for the cabin of my 4th Gen, nor is it 50 state compliant.
My first consideration was a standard 18.5" 12 gauge with slugs. 50-75 yards of range *reliably* real world? Maybe? Quick deployment if mounted in scabbard behind passenger seat... But rounds-limited, large, prevents rear seats from folding down.
A short bolt action ranch rifle? Plenty of range. .556, .308, .300 Black etc.. Cali & British Columbia compliant, very slow ROF even if I train hard & learn to run the bolt... But better than nothing?
As for vehicle placement: My first choice is zipped into a scabbard mounted to rear of the passenger seat muzzle down, cable locked to seat mounts. Second choice would be cable locked to headboard rack above or behind rear seats, zipped into a bag. (my rear windows have dark tint).
Any suggestions? Opinions? Critisisms?

I just did a test fit, my Keltec KS7 shotgun fits behind the full length of the passenger seat. I don't have a scrabboard to know how well that would work behind the seat. Mini shells came a long way you can have 11 in the tube and load a velcro side saddle with 2 3/4" shells. K7 recoil is very manageable add a TRL HL and you are golden.

Thanks for checking fitment! A KS7 is absolutely on my radar. For some reason I disqualified the KS7 because it has an evil pistol grip. California legal? I think so actually. And you're right, a side saddle or velco shell card would be plenty of ammo. Problem solved there.
Cheers.

Honest question. Has anyone here been in a situation where having a rifle in your truck saved your life or someone else’s? Just trying to figure out who other than LEO or maybe private security needs an AR in their vehicle.

Why do you "need" a Toyota 4Runner? Shouldn't only LEO's and Private Security own 4Runners?
Why do I "need" and AR15 in my truck?
Because it's my god given right. It's protects my god given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Just like it's my god given right to drive whatever vehicle I want to drive.

It's saved some livestock & LGD lives.
However, that's besides the point because nobody has to justify it, because it's a right. You never know when you may need it and there's no harm in being prepared.

It's the hot new 4Runner accessory to keep everyone alive longer.

I have not, but the option is important, in case I feel as though I should.
We over-accessorize our vehicles in every other respect, so why not this one.

I mean, I carry a pistol in my 4Runner and/or on my person, but I can never imagine a scenario like the movie Heat where I have to break out an AR and get into a gun battle. I certainly hope I would never be in that situation

Have you watched the news over the last year?
Riots, Antifa, Looting, Extreme Violence, Defunding the Police, Police being told by Mayors not to respond.
We're on our own.

No, but large, excited groups tend to have less empathy towards individuals and have no reservations about pulling motorists from vehicles and beating them... sometimes to death. We've seen this time and again during various riots.
And before someone comes in with the "you expect them to wait for you to get your rifle" line of ignorance (usually from people that have never had to fight for their lives, nor ever been in a gun fight) ... no, that's what my pistol and spare mags are for, to get me to my rifle (if need be). If escape and evasion are off the table, the only other option is overwhelming violence of action... by any means necessary.

You are not wrong... and people are responding accordingly.
If you thought toilet paper shortage was bad, the gun and ammo industry is even worse. Shelves are bare, and ammo is at an extreme premium.
There have been record number of gun purchases this year due to current events.
The demographics show some pretty interesting information regarding first time gun buyers. Many who had no prior interest, or were even against guns have changed their tune.

Nope, I don't carry, but I am not opposed to those who do. I would if I could, but the laws in my jurisdiction do not allow for it without going foul of the law.
My first line of defense is to actively try and avoided bad situations, and don't inject yourself into high liability scenarios.
As far as "need"... it's not really up for debate, nor is it something a gun owner should have to justify.
It's the same reason I buy insurance or wear a seatbelt, risk management. I don't get into my car looking to get into an accident to ejected from my vehicle. I wear it incase trouble comes looking for me. I also drive carefully and respectfully to help insure I don't compromise myself. I believe most who carry a firearm share a similar sentiment, but you occasionally get that one a$$hole speeding down the highway that ruins it for everyone else.
Personally I think it's a shame that many people looking for a source of protection can't actually exercise this right in a legal manner.
There is a monetary cost and legal implications of using deadly force for self defense, but if you are dead, the legal bills are a moot point.
