My 10 inch barrel AR Pistols are too long for that spot.

Now my Serbian M92 AK47 Pistol fits minus the mag and muzzle brake...

Sure it's not as ergonomic or powerful as an AR, but I view it akin to carrying a subcompact I can easily conceal versus trying to conceal a 1911.
This is exactly what I did. Bought a 9mm Kel-Tec 2000. It has a 17 rd Glock mag inserted and another 33rd mag attached with several rubber bands. The rife easily fits into a small backpack. You can buy a specially made violin case for it too.
Don't underestimate the power of a 9mm round. It's more than sufficient in most self defense cases. Also, people who plan to shoot an AR15 SBR out of a vehicle, have probably never done it before. Heck, your ears will ring for a long time if you shoot it out in the open. The amount of concussion it creates is nothing to joke about. I wouldn't do this without adequate hearing protection.

OP, it's probably best to make a lockable storage case for the AR. Make sure it's securely bolted to the vehicle. I would personally make a shorter case and keep the upper and lower receivers detached. It only takes several seconds to put it back together.

Drobs is the only one doing it right in this thread.

I carry my MK18 to the left of the center console using the pass seat as a stock rest, very similar to his photo. If i have a front passenger i throw it on the floor behind their seat.

A small bike lock through the fsp and around a seat mount would be a good way to secure it if you do need to leave it in the vehicle. Don't have an FSP? You are doing it wrong.

I agree. Dont count 9mm out. It's why so many agencies are dropping 40 in favor of 9. Some of the +p loads and projectile tech is truly amazing. 9mm has come very far thanks to some great minds.

9mm and 330blk arent anywhere near as bad out of a short barrel as 5.56. 5.56 was never designed to be shot out of short bartels. Which is why the mk18 is the shortest service rifle there is out there. Velocity drops off incredibly quickly after that. My mk18 shoots handloads a little under 2600fps. That's 500-600 fps slower than a 16-18" barrel, and that's pretty much at a max charge.

There are also forward blast devices, such as the surefire warden that really help. Put one on a 9mm (like a ar9), and it's even better.

If you're getting shot at, or shooting to neutralize a threat, the last thing you are worried about is your hearing and your adrenaline is likely off the charts. With the added stresses of everything going on, I dont recommend keeping the upper and lower separate. You really need to make your rifle accessible as possible and be able to get into the fight ASAP with as little steps as possible.

Yeah if you never plan to leave your vehicle. Even with a lock, a determined thief could have a pair of bolt cutters, or just separate your lower from your upper. This can all be done in about 15-20 seconds. Not to mention some of the stories I've heard about people getting pulled over and cops having no idea what an AR pistol because they assume it's a SBR. (Imagine trying to explain that to someone who has no idea, the premise of it doesnt make sense to begin with so good luck, lol)

I roll like that when I'm in the mountains where no one is around me, but as soon as I'm done it goes back in it's bag. Concealment is a great tool to have in your stable.

I prefer free floated barrels over FSB. I dont know what's wrong about having more potential accuracy?

Seat wont lock closed but it works just fine. You can also do the same with the seat back folded down.

All guns are loud without hearing protection. My ears already ring as it is.

I need to buy a couple suppressors. Been putting off getting 1 or 3 for the past 10 years.

You can put a cable lock through the ejection port, out the mag well, and around the seat post.

A determined thief could also break into your house and steal your guns / safe.

I debate mounting this in the rear of my 4Runner:
Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gunlocker RFID by Hornady

I'd want to keep an AR145, Air Compressor, and D Ring Shackles in there.

A determined thief could also pull up in a flat bad and load your vehicle on it in 2-3 minutes....

Thieves are not determined, they are lazy. And an upper is way more valuable than a lower.

The best part about getting pulled over is that you do not have to explain anything to law enforcement. The ATF is the only one who can request to see your private tax information.

To each his own i guess.

I own a gun store and I get asked this question quite a bit. I have been running a product called RackBone for a while. I works pretty well. I think they have been recently bought out because their website is down right now, but you may be able to find a used one. Another (more expensive ) option is to go with a Blac-Rac retention system. I will be adding one to my 4Runner soon. I am going to put a cross member in using the mounting points for the back seat hand rails. This will keep it up tight against the roof and it will also work as a hand support since you will need to remove the OEM handles. One of the guys that owns Blac-Rac came by the store the other day and this was the system he was using. Looked great. Did not interfere with head room and you could not see if from the outside unless you were deliberately looking for it. I'll post pics when I get mine done.

I bought a new Armalite M4gery for $350 which is my truck gun. There are tons of sales on very reliable rifles. I have thousands of rounds through my armalite and would put it up against DD in terms of going bang every time. Also, PSA rifles are just fine. I wouldn't replace my Barnes or WW with one, but it's better than nothing.

Depends. Your handgun is meant to be in the front with you. If you feel like you'll be in a rolling gun battle and want to pull your SBR out from next to your console or break through a road warrior style road block i suppose you need it up there. I just want mine in my general proximity so I can access it within a minute if i'm stuck somewhere away from my house and happen to need a rifle caliber. Otherwise, i'll just use my carry gun.

yeah, but they are incredibly unlikely to do that in the middle of the day. i cant tell you how many stories i have heard of peoples truck guns getting stolen in the middle of the day. another example is people who stow them away out of sight, but their issue is the gun stickers they have on their rigs. i have also heard stories of thieves targeting vehicles with gun stickers on them because they know they are far more likely to find a firearm. not always the case, but i just thought i would include that example.

yes an upper is more valuable, but it doesnt matter because its not regulated like a lower. your state may not require you to report a stolen firearm/lower, but if its used in a crime and someone is hurt/killed, you may be liable because you did not report it.

if you do report it, you will look like an idiot because you essentially just left a rifle sitting in broad daylight in your car for someone to take(using drobs example that you seem to like). ***not calling drobs names or accusing him/her of anything, im sure he/she doesnt leave it sitting out in plain sight while he runs into the grocery store*** (i hope no one does this)

sure you may not have to 'explain' anything to a LEO, but that is asking for trouble. at the bare minimum back up will be called and you will be removed from the vehicle while they make sure you arent a felon or have any warranty out for you. does that really sound like fun to you?

basically all of my rebuttal points can be solved by one thing: a backpack. i used to work at a private gun range and helped people with stuff like this. i am obviously biased for backpacks and guns, but its because ive seen it be one of the most effective tools in a real world application. we identified problems with open carrying or needing to easily be able to conceal a rifle, we set out to help people get around this. having a good bag is also very important. no a backpack isnt going to solve everything, but it certainly helps in the right situations. its a great tool to have in your chest when you need it.

its been a while since ive shot an armalite, but i remember it being fine. i mean its gotta be atleast okay if the A in AR stands for Armalite, right?! i always buy stuff on sale too because im cheap.

PSAs are 'fine' but they make range of rifles and uppers, they have uppers that use FN's cold hammer forged barrels. i would put that upper in a much higher regard than a non lined steel barreled upper for 200 bucks. i personally dont buy PSAs stuff because i build all my own stuff, but if i bought factory stuff i would buy something a little higher than PSA. i dont own a bazillion rifles (no need for my needs), so i spend a little more than the absolute bottom dollar because i expect it to work wherever i go (snow, rain, etc.).

your pistol should be carried on person, IMO. depending on who you ask, some will say the pistol's sole purpose in your life is to get you to your rifle. while i generally agree, there are plenty of situations in which you just dont have the time and you need to use your pistol right now.

Did you make that locking cover? It looks great! Tinted plexi glass I'm guessing.

Anyone have success with the magnetic mounts? I had thought of mounting a magazine to a ram mount with a magnetic (ronin) for the barrel. Problem I had was getting the right angle so I'm still looking for solutions as well. In my case as a Canadian, we have AR 15 variants that are non-restricted... no self-defence laws so the purpose is only for hunting.

Still working on solutions... has anyone found magazine attached mounts for a rifle to ride in the passenger side of the console.

Thanks guys!

Cover is aluminum sheet with a lock that I made in the garage, and I since have shot it with plasti-dip to blend it in. I think if you cut either end in there it would fit an intact rifle.https://www.toyota-4runner.org/attac...1&d=1578606633
