Jack stands

I have a pair of 6 ton jack stands and planning to get two for extra security, tire rotation and other maintenance. They may take more space in the garage though. Do you think they are necessary?

You kind of need four jack stands to lift a car, so I don't know why you'd think that having four would be unnecessary/

Also they take up like one square foot each. I'm sure you can find room for them.

Mine stack pretty easily if they are leaned against a wall so there's minimal space lost

I have 9, Wife lost one.
Two pickups, one SUV, one station wagon, 3 motorcycles, 1 quad (so far), 2 trailers. They see a lot of use.
Motorcycle lift, 2 floor Jack's, 2 hydraulic bottle Jack's, engine hoist & engine stand. Tools sometimes get used beyond their intended purpose around the ranch.

Harbor freight work well enough. 3ton will be plenty. Could do less for the rear.

I had to check, I’ve got more than I thought.
2x 2Ton
2x 3Ton
2x 3ton slightly taller
1x 3ton unijack (bottlejack/stand combo)
1x 2Ton cheapo floor jack
1x 3ton aluminium floor jack
2x bike stands.

I guess I lost track of my purchases haha.

I think 4- 6 ton jack stands is overkill.

Let's just say a 4runner is 5k pounds fueled up, aftermarket skids, sliders, bumpers, winch etc. The entire truck is 2.5 tons. However, 6 ton jack stands go higher and if you don't have smaller cars you work on, then overkill isn't a bad thing.....Especially when it comes to safely lifting vehicles.

I have a low profile jack and 4- 3 ton jack stands because I also own a BMW m3 that I work on. With the low profile jack I doubt I could even get the truck high enough to put a 6ton stand in.

I have used 3 ton stands for a lot...but recently got a pair of 6 ton for the height advantage alone. I have 5100s all around and the suspension drops enough that the tire would contact my garage floor with the 3 ton jack stands in the fully extended position. To remove wheels I had to keep the truck up on the floor jack which is less than ideal. Then remove wheels and slowly lower onto the 3 ton stands...

I bought 6 ton stands after seeing that thread.

3 ton jack stands are rated for the pair of the stands, and the 4Runner is damn close to 3 tons.
Aside from that, my new 6ton stands are much taller. I’m glad I upgraded. And having 4 makes life easier for things like tire rotations

I’ll echo what others have said, your standard 6-ton stand is good for 4Runners due to their height, creates a safer lift.

That said, small ones are nice to have for spring and link work, let’s you lower the axle down safely. I think I have 6x 6-tons and a pair of 2-tons? Scissor jacks found as OEM on some vehicles are great too, super low profile for tight lifting scenarios.

6 tons give peace of mind. Also the extra height and stability is nice. With that said i have bent 2x 6 tons... but it was my fault. My buddy has 12 ton stands! They are massive!

Looks like they were extended too far or the vehicle moved. Jack stands have a minimum of 1.5X safety factor. You should never bend one if used properly.

That said, I always use the floor jack to backup one side.

I don't care if anyone says 3 ton stand are enough.

I got 4 6tons. I'm not about to become a pancake. I have a low pro jack and it can lift the 4R high enough to make it on all 4.

I also have the jack holding on the same side I'm working. Never can be too safe.
