So I took it back to the dealer and they performed a smoke leak test on the evap system and found that the o-ring on the hose from the gas tank to the canister was damaged. Supposedly they couldn't replace just the o-ring so they replaced the entire hose assembly. It's been 6 days and so far it seems to be fixed.

Good to hear that it was an offshoot yet minor fix.

I have a bad habit of refueling with the vehicle running. When I remove the cap, there’s a sound similar to a small electric pump running. No other vehicles of mine do this.

Am I correct in seeing that no 2016's are on the recall list?

It seems there was a range of manufacturing dates where the installed fuel pumps were OK.
Between 2/15 to 5/18.

I wonder if the fuel pump becomes a regular maintenance item. So every 5 or so years it goes bad? Does anyone know if the part that was installed is a different part number than the original part number that got recalled?

For the airbags, all the manufacturers were just installing the same fundamentally flaw design airbag. Just that the new ones are fresher and hasn't had 3-5 years to soak up moisture/humidity from the air.

Does anyone know if the fuel pump recall requires an ECU re-flash?

Same issue as clanholm was having with the TRAC OFF and CHECK ENGINE lights coming on after the Fuel Pump recall. Mine took a good week though before it happened.

Same problem with the O-Ring not sealing properly. Took it in and the dealer fixed it. Did not say if it was not installed properly when they did the recall or if the new fuel pump unit wasn't correct when installed. One day later and all seems to be well so far.

I dont know if clanholm or anyone else had this issue also but before my dash lights went off, I noticed a significant lag in my gas pedal at launch. Also, start up was hesitated more than usual. Just some FYI if you experience any of these issues post recall.

Really glad I came here as I just had a similar experience.

I had my fuel pump replaced under recall in December, and just had it fail on me this week. Hard to say if it was related, but should thankfully be covered under the parts warranty.

I got back to the vehicle after a three day backpacking trip and it started rough, had low power, with TRAC Off, CEL, Multi Terrain lights on. The acceleration was a bit rough, but it got to speed and got me home. When I went to try diagnose it the next day, it was in full limp mode. Checked on a few of the obvious things (gas cap, fuses, MAF sensor) before taking to an independent mechanic who identified it as the fuel pump. From there it was off to the dealer where it's now in their hands.

UPDATE: Dealer just called and confirmed it was the o-ring seal that others have mentioned.

Do you not have a good relationship with your Toyota dealer? I am curious why you take your vehicle to a private mechanic when it comes to a warranty/recall issue?

Had I known it was the fuel pump that had failed I certainly would have taken it to the dealer first given it would have been warrantied. No issues with my dealer, but generally for diagnostics and troubleshooting I use a different mechanic who can do it for a fraction of the cost and has earned my trust when things hit the fan. It also helps that he's also a Toyota Master tech.

In the 7 years I've had my 4Runner, it's never needed anything but routine maintenance (and body repair from running into rocks). Then I had the fuel pump recall/replacement and it failed coming into Great Basin National Park, 200 miles from the nearest dealership. Got the tow to Orem, Utah (along with our travel trailer) and they discovered that some retaining clips had been broken during the install, provided us with pictures. Dealership there was great, even let us camp in their lot while the part was ordered and the work done.

The dealership that performed the recall was very good about reimbursing all expenses, but it did cause some lost days from our vacation.

2014 SR5 owner here, bought slightly used (10k miles) in Dec 2014...

I hadnt had any issues at all with my rig in 7yrs of ownership...scheduled maintenance done front to back as time and/or mileage dictated...still loving the ownership experience.

I took it into the dealership yesterday, got them to perform an oil change and tire rotation along with the recall work...they replaced my fuel pump as well.

now lets see how this goes...

Just had ours in for routine inspection and fuel pump recall all good so far.
Also picked up the 2014 used back in mid July of 2019. It had 7'800 on it.
We currently have 44'00 a couple of lengthy trips cross country with trailer, rtt and gear. From hot to mountains, to interstate speed, never a hint of a problem.
Due for some brakes in the future.

We had the fuel pump recall replacement performed on our 2018 SR5 about a month ago. Never had any issues with the stalling noted in the recall notice but decided to have it replaced anyway for peace of mind. However, since we got the truck back we have been having issues with the truck taking several seconds (5-8 seconds) to turn over now. Battery is brand new. Most of the time we have to let it turn over once for a second, pause, then turn it over again which still results in a long delay before it starts. When we first noticed this the day after picking it up we took it back to the dealership to have it looked at again and big surprise, they could not find any “codes”. I got some BS line from the tech that the 4Runners do this in hot weather (we live in Las Vegas) and that we would just have to deal with it. We never had this issues in the previous 3 years of ownership with the old fuel pump ( including equally hot summers) and I am furious with the response from Toyota. We even switched from 91 to 87 octane fuel to see if that would help and it did a bit, but the problem remains. Has anyone else had this issue?
