My 2019 has the same noise coming from the fuel tank, noticed it when i was putting chains on the rear tires last week up in the mountains. Now I'm getting concerned, leaving for Utah in march with some off road and long trails planned. Both sites say that my unit is not affected.

I noticed when refueling and leaving the truck running I would get this strange pump noise that I never herd from any of the other 20 cars I have ever owned/driven. Strange noise when filling with gas Too bad a few wanted to shit on my thread because it may have been an early warning.

I'm curious if it will go away once this recall is done.

I have the same noise, driver side rear wheel well.

Notice when airing up or down. Level of fuel also has an effect on the noise.

Gauge issue

Has anyone had issues with the fuel gauge not showing the correct amount after the dealer done the recall? We ran out of fuel yesterday and the gauge still showed, 1/8 tank.

Sounds like a bad sending unit. Take it back to the dealer that performed the recall.

I tried using Lucas upper cylinder lubricant thinking it might help with the fuel pump noise and it completely eliminated it, it’s butter smooth now, quiet as a church mouse. Ran 3 tanks before I decided to listening to it, supper happy. Not sure if I stop using it if the noise will come back so I use it every fill up.

Angry 2020 4Runner Stalling with Recalled Denso Fuel Pump 23220-31430

I have a 2020 (Limited) 4Runner that's been stalling every ~1K miles since I got it. 2 stalls ago, I was going ~55 MPH up a mountain pass on I-70 in CO in the left-hand lane. I completely lost power. It threw DTC P1603 stored with FFD. The dealership couldn't reproduce it & didn't do anything. I took it back to the dealership where I purchased it after the next stall. They are trying to give it back to me, now. My fuel pump is Denso part number 23220-31430, which seems to be the issue from https://static.oemdtc.com/Recall/20V...0V682-0794.pdf, but the updated recall seems to still not cover the 2020 4Runner. My dealership (AutoNation) is refusing to file a warranty claim without being able to reproduce it. Toyota is refusing to warranty the fuel pump without the dealership telling them to. Does anybody have any friends at Toyota or AutoNation or any other ideas outside of calling other dealerships to see if they'll do it or contacting a lawyer?

Ah... good old Autonation, there's a reason I quit working at the last dealer owned by them, well a lot of reasons actually.

In regards to when you talked to Toyota; what department did you call? Did you explain that you have had this issue occur twice already and it's physically stalled the vehicle while driving? I wouldn't focus on the fuel pump or push them to replace it, you have no way of determining that at the moment and doing so is probably hurting your case. The reason I say that is because the part number doesn't entirely mean your fuel pump is a "bad" unit, that part number existed for about 4-5yrs of production if not longer; the issue is in one or more batches of that part number. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the replacement part number is the exact same as the current part number since this seems to be a QC/Process issue and not a defect in design (I don't actually know if it is the same, because this recall has us input the VIN to spit out the parts we need to order and that's generally handled through the parts department side, not service).

All that being said, I would approach this by first calling back the dealership and getting as much information as possible from your service writer (how long was the vehicle driven, what speeds, did they open a TAS Case?) If the service writer is unwilling to answer your questions I would elevate it (politely and professionally) to the Service Manager/Director and talk with them about your concerns and seeing if there's anything else they can do to try diagnose the vehicle because this has happened twice to you already and it's very concerning.

I would also lean on Toyota Corporate and leaning on the fact that this vehicle has stalled twice already while driving down the road; possibly resulting in a situation that could have ended badly (don't ham it up too much; but emphasis that you felt deeply fearful that the vehicle shut off completely while driving.) I would relay any information the service writer/manager gave you and any TAS Case# they provided.

The idea here is to push at both ends and force Toyota to send an FTS to the dealer and elevate the issue further in the hopes that the FTS will be able to assist in the diagnosis and/or at least officiate your concern further up the ladder. It may still result in nothing and the vehicle may be returned to you without anything being done; but should the issue happen a 3rd time, it will give you far more ammunition should you decide legal action.

I wish I could help a little bit better than this, but it's the best I can do from my seat here. : /

Thanks a ton; I really appreciate it. That makes sense about not pushing the fuel pump. I've basically done the rest minus getting the speeds & TAS Case, which I'll try next. After posting, I got through to a new Toyota Corporate supervisor who was helpful & is calling the AutoNation Service Director Monday to discuss 🤞🏻. If they just give it back, I'm considering running with a ScanGauge (I already have) & Bluetooth ODB2 scanner so next time there's no questioning it. Even if they do say it's the fuel pump, I understand I'm unlikely to have a replacement yet; so, waiting seems like the play regardless.

Something else I'll just throw out there is that I see a lot of people saying "it doesn't take 4hrs to do the job! etc. etc."

I will point out that the job itself doesn't take that long, the usual accompanying multi-point inspection that most techs don't get paid for, the fact that your vehicle is not the only vehicle being brought in for a concern, and the fact that at that given moment the shop is probably busy working on a dozen other vehicles, means that they need to give wiggle room to make sure everyone's vehicle gets serviced in a timely manner and everything is done properly.

I mean this in the nicest way possible to you guys: The world doesn't revolve around you or your 4Runner, other people are at the dealer to get their vehicles worked on just like you and the more time we as service people have to work on your vehicle the easier it is to move work around so that the best quality can be applied to each and every vehicle that comes through the door. They're not a fast food joint, so if you can leave your 4Runner a couple of hours or pick it up at the end of the day you're helping not only yourself, but everyone else as well.

-Some idiot grease monkey :P

Post Note-

So far in our area we've seen only a few fuel pumps either fail causing a stall or start to fail causing a stumble/poor acceleration concern. So if you're sweating about the fuel pump taking a shit and leaving you stranded, the statistics are in your favor that it probably won't happen. Hopefully that will ease the late nights worrying for some of you, but if you do experience some issues outlined in the recall notice and are eligible I'd contact the dealer and let them know.

If only there was some way to plan for a customer to get work done at a time and day that would provide the best results for the mechanic and customer. A way to make sure parts are on hand and the customer knows his transportation is not sitting in the lot for hours if not days. If only there was a way.

Not 100% sure, but I believe it is same noise I had, and if it is, then the noise is "normal" sound of return fuel line amplified by gas tank skid plate, here is my post about it: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...highlight=pump

I totally agree with that statement mate, the problem is that you're assuming the dealership has their scheduling department under control and that they care about not trying to shove more work in the shop than sometimes is reasonable.

The issue is, let's say I get a 20TA02 on a 4Runner done in 1 hour. But I have 6 of them to do. No problem, I work 8hrs a day; I'll get them all taken care of. Oh, wait all those customers want to sit in the lobby and wait for their vehicle to be done by Noon? and everyone else in the shop is also in the same situation and we only have one or two lifts that we can use for the fuel tank at a time?

I don't deal with customers directly, that's the front desk people's job, service writers/scheduling and such. They'll promise a customer "Oh it only takes an hour" now scheduling has already slit our throat and when the customer is like, "they told me only an hour!" and the service writer doesn't want a bad customer score so they'll just flop over and let them dictate an unreasonable due out time. Then that gets sent back to us and we look at the service writer and go, "you do know how a clock works right?"

By the time it gets back to the technician, that tech is already ****ed if the due out time is unreasonable and it usually causes a cascade of calling back customers to ask them to overnight cars or extend their original due out time.

I have this argument multiple times a year and all I get told is, "we'll make it work." Feels shitty all around when customers get bumped into the next day because someone was given unreasonable expectations by scheduling and we have to "fix" the problem when they get to us (we have an off-site scheduling department that is supposed to have a list of average times for recalls and work, but they almost never actually read it and give BS times out of their ass to get a customer in the shop.) The shitty thing (and I just found out about this a year or two ago) is that apparently for Toyota how many new cars you're allotted per year has to do with your gross profit and number of customer traffic in your dealer as a whole. So they not only look at how many cars we sell, but how many cars we work on and how much work we sell on those vehicles and how many are return customers and that gets fed into some algorithm and then Toyota goes, "Oh you get 10 more new cars this year on top of your yearly allowance."

I could go on and on for hours about the annoying intricacies of dealership life, but that's neither here nor there; I was just saying that if you can leave the car longer or can just pick it up the next day, you're helping the service writers and the technicians out because we're usually the ones that are on the bottom of the pile if you catch my drift. Hell, the dealer in our town is much better than the one I left before and the other ones back in the Bay Area in that regard.

I finally got my 2015 Limited recall done. I waited over 11 months on Stevens Creek Toyota's waiting list. Had 2 appointments rescheduled because they didn't have the pump. On the 3rd one they tried to apologize again and say they dont' have the part, but I pushed back and said I've been on the waiting list for over 10 months. They found my name and said ok, I understand, and gave me an appointment 2 months away.

I asked for a Loaner, and I got a free loaner. A nice brand new Tacoma SR 4cylinder 4door short bed. I dropped it off close to 9am, the service advisor said oh... will be done at 5pm, but let me call you to confirm. I asked if he was sure. He said ofcourse, at 3pm that day they called me said it will be tomorrow and I could keep the loaner. So I managed to make 2 home depot trips with the Tacoma (phew!) 4x8 sheets of 3/4" is heavy! and I bought maybe 10 sheets worth in total for various projects.

They called me back at 2pm the spill over day and said it was finally done. They tried to push me for an oil change as I was at 60,000 miles, but I had just changed it 2 weeks ago myself. I wish I had gotten this coupon in the mail before I did it myself, they had a 44.95 sale for oil change with synthetic with new filter up to 5 quarts. I wonder if they use Toyota 0W20 OEM oil if it is 44.95USD sale.

So as a reference point for others...

yes I got a loaner.
I waited 11 months for the fuel pump
I live in the SF Bay Area

I don't think a 4cylinder Tacoma is any good. It is mega mega slow!
