I can tell you the 2020 sr5s don't. But I did talk to my local viper alarm dealer he said all smartkeys can be programmed with a module coming out around April. So if you didn't want any of the fancy stuff you can still use your stock key and get remote start / turn off lock etc. The viper I have on my 15 Tacoma from viper is way fancier and I rarely use the extra shit.

I work at a Toyota dealer, very few come with remote start from the factory. The only thing new is other models now come with push button start, not to be confused with remote start.

Remote start is useful when truck camping and you want a bit of heat, saves jumping into the drivers seat.

Every Pro, every Limited. I’m not confused.

Anyway to prevent the vehicle from shutting off when opening the door - short of not opening the door?

That's been a "feature" of the Toyota OEM remote start system forever. I've never seen an option to do that besides installing an aftermarket system.

The manufacturer does this for a reason, to prevent theft, more on this below.

Aftermarket systems will allow the car to run, unless you open the hood or push on the brake pedal. The hood will generally use an oem switch wire or aftermarket hood switch and a wire tapped into the brake wire. You will generally unlock the doors, get in the car, put your key in the ignition, turn it to the run position, push on the brake to deactivate the remote start, and just start driving. The reason the car does not shut off, after pushing on the brake, is because the key is now in the run position.

Now, let's look at the aftermarket system from a theft perspective. You start your car, thief breaks the window and jumps in, forcefully turns the ignition to the run position, pushes on the brake, and drives off. The car will continue to run until shut off. The transponder in the key is only needed to start the car, not to keep it running. Some installers will use an existing programmed transponder and will secure it under the dash somewhere.

With the OEM system, you start the car, unlock the door, the car shuts off, you get in restart the car, and then start driving.

OEM system from a theft prospective. You start the car, thief breaks the window, climbs in without opening the door, forcefully turns the ignition to the run position, pushes on the brake, and the car shuts off. The OEM system will not allow the car to go anywhere without a restart. The brake pedal is another safety feature that will shut the car off if pressed. Sure the thief can disconnect the brake pedal wiring, but now the shift lever won't function without the brake signal. Even if they somehow get passed all of that, the car automatically shuts off after 10 minutes and will require a restart.

I installed aftermarket remote starts for many years, as a career. They can be bypassed and allow your car to be started by thieves easily. It has been a few years, so I'm pretty sure that some of the new aftermarket systems are better at slowing thieves down, but it will still make your vehicle more vulnerable. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Yeah I get why they do it.

These days, it's just as likely that someone clones your keyless entry key signal and takes off with the car. No muss, no fuss.

I just picked up my 2020 ORP, no factory start. I am gathering the necessary items to put a compustar unit on it. I just need a relay and a hood pin. I took it off my 4th gen so I need new ones. They make a basically plug and play harness. I'll keep you guys posted if anyone wants to go that route.

I prefer the aftermarket units for the range. I have the 1 mile antenna and it's nice being able to start it from my office at work, 5 minute walk to the car and it's warm.

That’s one good thing about the factory remote start. The app will let you start it from anywhere.

Makes sense but I prefer to leave it running. Someone wants it that bad they can have it. Does Lexus do this also? I know Ford and Jeep oem stays running

Has anyone installed, or had installed a remote start from 12 volt solutions? The dealer finally did mine and it only works from around 10 yards making it pretty much worthless.

Does it have it's own remote or does it use the factory fob?
