Mine uses the factory remote but they do sell a separate long range remote. They also sell a separate module to that would allow app use. I think I'll eventually get the module.

Funny this thread popped up because I was just playing with the remote start in my ‘20 Pro this afternoon. Started her up, opened the door...and it turned off. Well, that’s pretty useless. Guess I won’t be using that “feature.”

To me it only seems useful when its super cold or super hot.
Getting ready to go to work hit the start 15 minutes before I leave, go out to a warmed up/defrosted car. Having to start it again after getting in doesn't detract from that.

The transponder in the key is only needed to start the car, not to keep it running. Some installers will use an existing programmed transponder and will secure it under the dash somewhere.
OEM system from a theft prospective. You start the car, thief breaks the window, climbs in without opening the door, forcefully turns the ignition to the run position, pushes on the brake, and the car shuts off. The OEM system will not allow the car to go anywhere without a restart. The brake pedal is another safety feature that will shut the car off if pressed. Sure the thief can disconnect the brake pedal wiring, but now the shift lever won't function without the brake signal. Even if they somehow get passed all of that, the car automatically shuts off after 10 minutes and will require a restart.

The one I installed from Accessorides works just like your description of the OEM system, other than shutting it off when the door is opened. Not entirely sure why Toyota cant duplicate that functionality.
I'm sure there's some reason, I cant imagine Toyata engineers just cant figure it out, but the theft angle doesn't seem to be it.

Same reason they can’t implement a proven technology like Bluetooth. Works fine in my Lexus and total failure in my 4Runner. Go figure.

Seriously... it's utterly insane. I can handle the occasional misconnnect, but when it takes 35 mins of resetting the headunit, rebooting the phone, and watching it connect to only the phone or only the audio player 37 times, I just want to punch a kitten.

I saw that video also, but my 2020 Limited won't do it.
Update:
I just tried my 2nd key fob and it worked. Went back to the original fob and it now works as well.
The back up fob must have taught the original fob how to do it.
Now they both work. Nice addition to the 2020 Limited.

Yeah my 2020 Pro you just click lock three times then hold the third and it’ll start up.

Somehow it's tied in with those equipped with the JBL package. So if you have that you should be able to use the remote as described and start the engine.

I was told that all 2020 Limiteds and TRD Pros have the remote start built in.

Its definitely stupid that it turns off. No other car probably does that. I use it to warm up the 4R and to leave running while my dog is in the 4R in the summer.

My 2015 would do this. Like many strange features, this may have come from lawyers.
I can see class action lawsuits initiated by people whose trucks were stolen while remote started.
Who knows.

My '12 Wrangler Rubicon had this feature and I used it for the same purposes. However, in the summertime it only runs about 10mins and shuts off. I had my dog in there on one of those 95F days, came back about 15min after I left her in there with windows up and AC on... but the engine was off. I nearly had a heart attack and was afraid to open the door. Thankfully, it was still very cool in the Jeep and she was fine, sleeping in the back seat, but I did learn a lesson.
Of course, when it was remote started and running, when you opened the door, it stayed running. You had to push the start button again to activate everything for driving.
