Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks

Of course ppl are going to say oh I could have or would have came up with that Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks. Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks

Edit. Update 4/3/20

Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks
That’s full droop with extended travel king shocks that measure 25 3/4” from center of lower eye to frame at the top where the pin top lower bushing rest. That’s 1/4” more then what’s available. And if one wanted to, you can run even longer as there still room for the system to swing and doesn’t come close to inverting the kdss system which will basically pull the plunger out the kdss shock.

Ok this my version of how to maximize the kdss equipped 4runners that have a lift and extended travel shocks. I know there’s that Sonoran steel zigzag track bar. But it just wasn’t for me. Plus the tolerances are tight. If you don’t run stock length links or if your axle isn’t in same location as stock, things will crash into each other. I personally didn’t like that , and the look of it. It could also have better joints as well. Totally not taking anything away from it as it’s an awesome idea. It just wasn’t for me.

Originally I was going to do my own version of a bent track bar ( and did ) but when I was test fitting it, a light bulb went off in my head. I got together with a long time friend Don Thuren ( thuren fabrication ) and came up with this. It works like a charm.

Here’s a link to my instagram so you can see a video on it.

Dom R on Instagram: “Here we go.... prototype kdss drop!!! Posting for time stamp while lawyers put together and file the patents. .. This is my fix for the…”

You can now run a straight track bar. Even the stock one which I have on the truck now. With that said I’ll make a straight track bar that utilizes more superior joints then what factory comes with. If you know about factory style bushing / joints. You know that it’s not designed for anything longer stock suspension travel.

This post is for a time stamp!!! Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks

More pics

Full droop. Extended travel King shocks

Full bump/
Compression. You can see that it’s still higher then the fuel cell.

Full articulation . Yes that’s a harbor freight floor jack. Don’t hate lol.

Edit
I forgot to post pic with the spare tire to show the amount of room there is. I’m not sure but can somewhat confirm if it looks like there’s more room now with the drop piece I made.

Ride height on 2” lift.

Full droop.

Edit. Got first batch in.

I don’t offer a spacer for the front because it’s not needed. You don’t want to lower that sway bar to try to correct a lean with a spacer. The front piston is still in the Oem location even with a lift. What’s the issue is the bushing at full droop is binding ( even at ride height depending on how much you have your pre load adjuster adjusted ) preventing a little more droop.

I have a cool fix for this. A while completely bushing design and mechanisms is in the works. Also I have an adjustable method for kdss lean in the works because relying on a fix part to correct a lean that varies in size is plain old lazy and stupid. Spacer up front still doesn’t correct the bushing angle. Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks.

I got the 4Runner on sept 23. Actually ordered king shocks before I bought it. Thought all the off road and off road premiums and pros came with kdss lol.

Found out there was an issue when my Kings shipped via this forum. Put them and and basically saw it first hand. Researched the fix and only found the zig zag track bar fix.

Decided there has to be a cheaper and easier way. Here it is. Maximize your KDSS + extended travel shocksMaximize your KDSS + extended travel shocks.

So technically I didn’t start working or studying these until about the beginning of December.

I let the dealer tell me they only sold KDSS in Arizona. My own damn fault for getting trigger happy and letting a salesperson tell me anything at all about the vehicle.

Not the end of the world I guess.

That's pretty funny when you read about all the time and effort Sonoran put into that bar (supposedly). Are you the same guy putting the bend in the trac bar before scrapping it and coming to this?

Be interested to see how these do. I'm not going crazy with my truck anytime soon but, happy to see new options for KDSS. All you need now is a shut off so you can leave the loop open for faster stuff.

I’ve actually done this before with another part in another industry.

With that said , I’ve actually talked to many more lawyers to confirm this and this is the new way of doing it. Many guys have attempted to get patents on some things that were publicly posted ( prior to them submitting ) and it allowed them to stop or reverses a patent pending because it was time stamp showing they actually had the idea first.

But I hear you loud and clear. I mean it’s actually damn near submitted

Well if it allows for full droop without changing the Trac-bar, that's genius.

Regarding the look of the Sonoran Steel Trac-bar, I think it looks pretty good and even if it didn't it's hard to see unless you move your spare to the rear bumper.

KDSS is only sold in Arizona. Wow, that's a good one. Not sure why he would tell you that unless the one with KDSS is the only 4Runner he had. Or maybe the only TRDOR that he had.

Isn't there a fixed point on the passenger side that won't allow any more down travel on that side?

Yes the hard link on the passenger side was the first main issue for not allowing for droop.

Icon made a bar that has a bend to clear that. But then once you clear that to gain more droop it will hand up on the driver side. This piece I made fixes all that and you don’t need a bend in a track bar let alone a after market track bar.

First part is the red circle. Icon track bar( or has a bend to clear the first ( red circle ) hang up. After that clearance is done. It will allow for more droop. Next spot it will hand up is blue circle but that’s and easy fix by replacing that bolt to a button head style so it will clear as it radius’s up. Then it will hang up on the green circle area.

Yeah well it takes two to tango. My dumbass didn't dig further.

It wasn't the only truck they had it was just another sales person that knows nothing about the cars they are selling but everything about jedi sales tricks. They moved me off that topic before I could even think about it and I let them.

As someone who has worked in the industry I think they just hire sociopaths, criminals, and pathological liars. Haven't met a single car salesman who didn't rub me wrong. Goes for most sales positions anywhere.

Not to derail the convo...

I'm sure your trac bar setup will be fine as long as you don't go to crazy with links and arms like dom stated. You can always switch and sell the trac bar. Be interesting to see a side by side. But I'm leaning on this being more efficient.

I don't understand the purpose of this modification. I see you extend the stabilizer, but what was the problem to do it in the first place? Why did you need to do it?

I am really curious and also work on my truck myself.

thanks

In short. If you have kdss 4Runner and lift it and have longer travel then stock shocks. The sway bar and track bar make contact and doesn’t allow for full droop of the rear axle.

Icon made a bent track bar to get around the first hang up but didn’t do anything else. So it will hand up on the axle side. Sonoran steel track bar is a track bar that zig zags around all those clearance to make it work but the tolerances are too tight for me. Axle must be in stock location ( front to back ) or things will crash into each other. My links are extended 1/8” back to center the axle front to back because when you lift it on the rear and don’t extended it then your axle will be more forward then centered.

But Go 2 post up for quick explanation.

Also check this write up out.

Hey thank you for the explanation. My rig has KDSS I will take a look at the sway bar and track bar when I switch rear springs from 2" to 2.5"
