I did the same except I velcro my controller to the over head console. Mine kept falling off the visor anytime I used the visor due to sun delay.

I agree, adding Oem upper console with homelink is the best option but the most costly.
Can I add this with the TRD? Doesn't it have all the crawl control stuff up there? How does this compare to the mirror with home link buttons? Any pics?

Adding the factory console is pretty inexpensive for the SR5, not so much for the OR. I bought the factory SR5 premium console for ~$170 and sold my stock console for $120. Net cost $50 and less than 10 minutes of work.

However, I believe the OR premium overhead console costs $900 or something like that. Not as viable of an option that way.

Yeah. I've got no interest in spending $900 for those buttons. I think the mirror with buttons is ~$130-150

This is more to hide it so a car burglary doesn't lead to a home burglary but it'd work for your uses, too.

Zip tie a mini opener to the steering wheel adjuster. There's a handy hole in the metal spine of the adjuster that lets you run a zip tie right through it.

This is my Tacoma but the 4R is exactly the same. Remove the paracord, I am not sure why I had it on there for the photo:

What momentary switch is available for one of those blanks?

That's the best way of making it look factory, yet hiding the fact that it is a garage door remote.

For those readers asking "why hide it?", many people don't lock the door between their garage and their house. If a car with a visible remote is parked outside, then people can break into the car, open the garage door and get into the house.

The problem I have with the Homelink is that the buttons operate without the ignition on, so you are kind of in the same situation with someone accessing your truck and hitting the button to open your garage.

And you probably don't want to hear about how car thieves are using Signal Amplification Relay Attack to steal cars out of driveways. If you can, I suggest parking your new shiny 4R inside your garage at all times and using a metal key box to store your keys inside your home. Technology can be great when it works but sad when it's so easily exploited.

That's my point! What's the benefit of having a chubby rearview mirror with illuminated buttons to open your garage door when it offers no better security than a shitty ol opener that can be carried with you or hidden?

FWIW I hate Homelink... I think the Gentex mirrors are gimmicky junk and the switches and data display makes it hard to use the mirror at nighttime. I immediately removed mine and sub'd a base OEM mirror from EBay...

But I know most people think they're awesome so I'll just quietly slink away...

Most people overlook that. This is why your idea of hiding it (or my idea of using one of those button blanks - labeled as something else) is far better.
