Do not go to dealership for oil change!
My mistake was going to the dealership for an oil change.
1.) they put in the wrong oil. then they said they put in the right oil after draining the wrong oil.
2.) they loosened the transmission instead of the oil pan nut. Had atleast 1 pint of tranny fluid on my driveway after coming home from the dealer.
I couldnt find a transmission dipstick on the 5th Gen to check how much tranny fluid i really lost, so now i have to go back to the dealer and tell them either to top it off, or, drain and replace all the tranny fluid.
Never going back to the dealer for an oil change.
I think my RCI Skidplates confused them on where the oil drain plug was. Why would they even touch my tranny. The tranny drain plug was loose, had to tighten it up.
*pissed*
Next time i go to my local mechanic for Mobil1 oil change or do it myself.

the 5th gen has no transmission dipstick. they will need to do a fill and use techstream to check the fill level.

Tow it
Have it towed on their dime and tell them you will call Toyota and report it.

On top off all the trouble I would cause at the dealership and a report to Toyota I would have them clean my driveway!
Get that notified by Toyota in case you have some trouble with engine or tranny down the road
Pretty sad that you’re not even save at the dealership - morons everywhere!

There are a number of individuals off Antman's oil change thread advising most not to use the dealer for the free oil changes. Some light reading if you have time: Oil Change 5th Gen: How To- LOTS of PICS! - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

It's becoming increasingly difficult to find competent people anywhere these days. If you want it done right...

new 4runner owners did drain the transmission. when doing the oil change.
now the drain plug on the engine is under the engine !!! very weird a Toyota floor sweeper messed with the wrong drain plug...
NOW over all the decades I do most all my vehicle work is, because they break stuff and they do not care..
a long time ago back in the 1970's I had firestone auto shop replace my transmission fluid/filter .. well the dum azz did not put the gasket on ? I looked under the car and a puddle of tranny fluid ..that job on a 1970 sedan was not complicated ..
todays world it is complicated and hard access to do work on vehicles.
your problem call them and tow it to the dealership .. report to Toyota that they failed to mess up your runner .. get documents to cover your azz.

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. Your case is filed at our headquarters office under your name and file #***********.
If you have any further questions, please contact us at 800-331-4331. Our hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CT Monday through Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
Told them I want the truck towed back to the dealer and fixed. Hopefully the dealer won't sabotage my 4 runner. It's bad enough they put in non synthetic engine oil when I been using fully synthetic oil, and loosened my transmission drain plug.
Let's see what the dealer offer's. I should get a call from them in the morning.
PS: off topic, I had new tires installed last week and I couldn't be more happy with the way they ride. 100% improvement over the Nitto Trail Grapplers.

dealer overhangs
I am sorry to hear this, but have several similar stories. I never take mine to a dealer unless it's work I can not perform.

One main issue is that they hire just about anyone to change oil and rotate tires. These are NOT Toyota or ASE certified techs... they get OJT when hired and put out on the quick lube line to change your oil.

You've got a list of mods a paragraph long and don't change your own oil? Drain plug, not a "lug nut".

This thread is scary.
I had my first of a year of free services last month. I haven’t seen any oil in my driveway. Yet. However, the ditz behind the service counter tried to charge me for the service, even though I presented them the coupon upon check in. Hopefully the shop full of ditzes put in synthetic oil and not the oil and kitty litter on the floor.
I am older and not mechanically inclined, haven’t changed my own oil since the days when you opened a car’s hood and actually could seen an engine. Now I’m too arthritic to get down on my snow covered driveway and crawl around under my Runner.
My local Pennzoil dealer has been getting my business for years and the family has never done me wrong. Maybe I’ll skip going in for my next free service and go to my usual shop.

I have the RCI Skid Plate... there is literally “1” hole that gives you access to the oil plug and “1” access plate to the filter. I changed the oil today in my driveway in 15 deg/snow... it’s stunning that they screwed this up.
As everyone is saying, do it yourself. Get a 14mm deep socket, a 6” extension, go buy the oil filter tool from Oriely’s, pick up a plug gasket, oil and filter and spend 30 minutes doing the job right. You’ll be glad you did.
